In my recent phone conversation with the "bride," she slipped up and I learned the couple were never legally mar- ried. The "bride" said the "groom" wanted to wait until 2015 because of taxes and now he wants a prenuptial agreement. The groom's cousin performed the ceremony. Guests traveled from four countries and across the country to attend, with 150 in attendance. As far as I can tell, beyond the "bride," "groom" and cousin, I am the only person who knows the couple are not legally married and that the wedding was a sham. Everyone else thinks they are married — includ- ing the parents. Both the "bride" and "groom" are professionals and in their 30s. This lack of integrity and respect is shocking. Please help me deal with this friend. —RSVPeeved DEAR RSVPEEVED » I may be extrapolating too much from this story, but my instinct is that if the "groom/ husband" is pe- rusing a prenuptial agree- ment at this point, there is a real possibility that this sham marriage may be followed by a breakup before a legal wedding ever takes place. The bride should have figured out by now that once she dons a wedding dress and participates in a bogus wedding ceremo- ny, legal leverage regard- ing prenups has pretty much walked itself down the aisle. The couple might qui- etly go to the courthouse, tie the knot and continue to celebrate the date of the ceremony and party as their anniversary. I understand your dis- tress over this. The most logical response would be to convey your disap- pointment to your friend. There is no need to dis- close this to anyone else. DEAR AMY » I work at a city department with about 20 employees. Our office receives two differ- ent newspapers every day and they are put in our lunch/break room for the staff to share. Recently someone has been taking the page with the cross- word puzzle and not al- lowing others to enjoy it. The problem is that your column and other daily printings are located on the same page and I love reading them daily. What is the proper protocol for communal newspapers? Should any one person fill out the crossword puzzles or take portions of the paper out of the break room? — Puzzled Reader DEAR READER » The most considerate way to handle a communal newspaper is for a thoughtful employee to photocopy the cross- words, etc., and leave sev- eral (uncompleted) copies on the break room table for others to puzzle over. The newspaper should remain in the break room. In terms of sharing this column, I favor dra- matic out-loud readings of the letters, followed by discussion about the content and speculation about the outcome.
