Perhaps they were still physically and emo- tionally drained from their slugfest the week prior with West Valley, but the Cardinals came out flat against Anderson. Corning senior captain Erik Miranda had a simpler answer. "They were more physical than we thought," he said. Whatever the reason the visiting Cubs (2-5) led 7-0 after the first quarter after Angelo Alle- gretto capped a 70-yard drive with a 1-yard run. Meanwhile, Corning's offense was held to just a single first down through the first 12 minutes. "We gotta' come out better than that," Corning quarterback Ryan Holland said after the game. While the second quarter would start with a Corning drive to tie the game, it wasn't until Anderson's next possession that the Cardinals snapped out of their funk. Linebacker J.D. Whited dropped back into coverage and picked off a Garrett Greenhaw pass and returned it 40 yards to the Anderson 5-yard line. The Cardinals sideline finally showed its usual enthusiasm and from that moment on it was the usual brand of Corning Union football — with a slight twist. After Holland took in his second of three rush- ing touchdowns the Cardinals for the second straight week turned to the pass. Holland finished the first half 6-of-8 passing for 89 yards and set up a Quentin McCormick 26- yard field goal just before halftime to give Corn- ing a 17-7 lead. "We opened it up," Holland said. "We made some big plays. We got a lot of guys who can catch the ball." Corning's new found aerial threat opened up Anderson for the usual Cardinals' ground and pound running game in the second half. Battling injuries and illness Whited picked up most of his 123 rushing yards in the second half, Daily News photo by Rich Greene Roy Madrigal and Erik Miranda sack Anderson quarterback Garrett Greenhaw. including a 2-yard touchdown run to put Corning up 24-7 Following an Anderson 26-yard field goal, Holland added his third score on the game on a nice read option play from 11-yards out. The touchdown capped a classic Corning drive of physical running form Whited and sophomore Thomas Lowe. The latter's efforts didn't go unnoticed by his teammates. "Our sophomore stepped it up right there — running down the field with 20 guys on him," Miranda said. John Lowe would add another Corning touch- down minutes later following a pair of sacks from the combined efforts of Madrigal, Cody Long and Roy Madrigal. Long also had a fumble recovery in the game. Anderson got one final score in the late going when Jeremiah Emershy took in a well-deserved touchdown. Emershy finished with a team-high 97 rushing yards for Anderson. When they weren't running Emershy or Dominic Allegretto the Cubs spent most of the night trying to burn the Cardinals' defensive backs on max protect fly routes. They could never complete one of the deep passes and at one point had thrown 12 consecutive incompletions. Greenhaw finished 3-for-17 for 32 yards. Holland meanwhile finished with seven com- pletions to five different receivers. John Lowe caught three balls for 72 yards. Martin Solano, Colton Conoly, Thomas Lowe and Cole Barnes also had receptions. Whited's 123 rushing yards led Corning. Hol- land added 62 on the ground. Thomas Lowe fin- ished with 43 yards on six carries. John Lowe had 26 yards on 10 carries. Fernando Gonzalez had a 10-yard carry, Ezekiel Rodgiuez had four yards on two carries, Nathan Fultz had a 5-yard carry and Conoly had six yards on two carries for Corning. Next up for the Cardinals is a visit from league foe Yreka. key for next week. The lesson learned from this week, will be the "Come out better in the first quarter. We can't have another first quarter like that," Holland said. "Then just play solid all the way through."
