Saturday, October 15, 2011 – Daily News Religion Faith&Worship Church news Masterworks Chorale Special to the DN The Red Bluff Masterworks Chorale will sing in concert at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 16, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in downtown Red Bluff. The theme for the concert is An Evening of Sacred Song. The Red Bluff Masterworks Chorale is conducted by Mark Franklin and accompanied by Darlene Lee. The Fall Concert by the Chorale features selections of favorite titles from past concerts and a collection of new pieces. The program is chosen from a variety of music styles including, hymtunes, psalm settings, and spirituals. The composers range from the classical to the contempo- rary eras. The concert will open with a strong arrangement of Psalm 150 declaring that all of creation should praise God. A highlight of this concert is the powerful arrange- ment of The Mind of Christ with text from Philippians 2. The Red Bluff Masterworks Chorale is a volunteer choral ensemble committed to presenting larger choral works in the community. The non-auditioned choral ensemble rehearses weekly to prepare music for concerts throughout the year. The Fall Concert is the first of this sea- son. The Chorale's next concert will be in December when the Chorale sings favorites of the Christmas season and highlights from Messiah by G.F.Handel. The Red Bluff Masterworks Chorale is the featured choir in the Christmas concert of North State Symphony Christmas. This season's concerts are partially funded by a grant from the Tehama County Arts Council who provided fund- ing for the popular Memorial Day Celebration in May 2011. Additional funding comes from local business support and contributions at the door. Tickets are not necessary for these concerts. The com- munity is invited to attend. Push back on divorce advice (MCT) — Televangelist Pat Robertson created an uproar last month when he said it would be all right for a husband to divorce his wife if she had Alzheimer's because the dis- ease "is kind of like a death." We asked professors from Christian institutions. 'HE ONLY LOVES WHAT SHE HAS TO OFFER' Thor Madsen, ethics professor at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, said Robertson's remarks were objectionable because, "if a man's loyalty to his wife depends on her freedom from cognitive impairment, then he does not love her. He only loves what she has to offer. "At last, each person abandons the other when relation- ships no longer seem to pay." LOYALTY, SACRIFICE ARE THE POINT Bruce Oldham, dean of the School of Christian Ministry at the MidAmerica Nazarene University in Olathe, Kan., said "...I do believe that the nature of the marriage relation- ship is a reflection of the love of God," he said. "The love and loyalty and sacrifice we give each other in marriage par- allels the love of God in our lives." TROUBLING REMARKS Robertson's remarks are problematic, said Glenn Young, assistant professor of theology and religious studies at Rockhurst University. "From the Catholic perspective, marriage is not just the joining of two human beings, but the joining of two human beings through the greater love of God," he said. STANISLAUS CATHOLIC CHURCH — 824-5879 Corner of 4th & D — MASS — Sunday 8:00AM - English RED BLUFF Quality of life How is their quality of life? You hear so much talk about quality of life. The media certainly stresses opinions of what brings about a good quality of life. It's a big issue within the medical field. The subject is even "tossed" around in helping people commit sui- cide. They call it mercy, helping folks take their own lives. That is because the world system has its own definition about quality of life. The glamour in the lives of our heroes, be it in sports or movie stars, encourages many to covet that type of "the good life." Or, perhaps "the good life" is a beautiful home, two or more cars, a boat, an RV, and a great job with many perks. And, then there is the quality of life that some senior citizens appear to have. You see them on the golf course, working out in the gym and full of energy. They may be finan- cially able to take exotic trips and "dance the night away." But, have you ever noticed how many people that appear to have "the good life" are unhappy, bored, totally wrapped up in themselves and are miserable to be around? Let's not forget the "good life crowd" that is experiencing the "empty nest syndrome." Many marriages dis- solve when all the kids are out of the home. We can have all of the qualities in our life that seem to bring the "good life" and still be empty. The glitter of this world can come and go in the blink of an eye. All of the qualities that seem to bring about the "good life" are like a pouch with a hole in it. Every- thing can slip right through the hole and be gone forever. Not a cheerful thought, but it's true! You see, that's where people are fooled by this world system. You may think that the manner in which you have designed your life will satisfy, but it's impossible to maintain such a life forever. Every- thing can change in the "blink of an eye." When this hap- pens you come up empty handed, and life doesn't look like apple pie ala mode any longer. You cannot buy peace of mind. You cannot purchase contentment. You cannot find joy, within or without horri- ble life circumstances, with- out knowing Jesus Christ. Many use His name as a curse word, but those who know Him personally do have peace of mind, content- ment, and joy ruling in their hearts, even when everything seems to be going wrong. These blessings are eternal, lasting forever, and never fade away. The key thought is that those who know Jesus Christ personally possess the "good life" with true quality of life. To know Jesus Christ is to love Him with everything in you. "You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength." (Mark 12:30) No "half baked" com- mitment brings about the full benefits of the "good life." There is nothing wrong with want- ing the "good life." It's just very sad that so much sincere effort is put forth in seeking it when the end results are empty and futile. Jesus Christ offers everyone real quality of life. Let me offer myself as an example. In 2009 a specialist diag- nosed me with uterine cancer. I'm 73, walk with some difficulty and use a cane, don't have much physical ener- Patricia Martin GodTalk gy, and I am not considered wealthy. Yet I am full of the joy of the Lord; I have the peace of God ruling in my life, have all of my needs met, and I'm blessed with friends and family that love me. While I'd like my life circumstances to be better, I'm content in the knowledge that I do have quality of life and I do pos- sess the "good life." For, the "good life" is found in knowing Jesus as Savior and Lord. He has always been with me through every valley and trial of my life, and all of His blessings are eternal. The blessings of knowing Jesus do not slip through a hole in my purse --- or my life. God loves you. Will you give your entire life to God? This is what Jesus said: "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me" (John 14:6). Get to know Jesus. He will be your best friend for- ever, and He will introduce you to the "good life." It's forever too. When your days are complete, He will take you home. You will live for all eterni- ty, and you can be certain that it's the "good life." E-mail godspreciousjewels@att.net to learn more about the real good life. Patricia brings gifts as practical as new shoes and as earth shaking as the Gospel. 3B
