F ayetteville has a hidden gem in the Cape Fear Botanical Garden, merely two miles from downtown. Master gardeners and tourists alike come from all over the state to see the well-manicured grounds and all it has to offer. The gardens encom- pass 79 acres nestled between the Cape Fear River and Cross Creek. There are two miles of nature trails through the landscaped gardens and through pine and hard- wood forests. The trails include a Laurel Loop Trail, Oak Loop Trail and River Trail with several overlooks on bluffs above the Cape Fear River. Most of the garden acres support indig- enous plants, trees and wildlife. More than 2,000 varieties of ornamental plants are showcased and there are hosta, daylily, conifer, camellia, shade, heritage and rain specialty gardens. The Children's Garden is soon to be expanded to include a belly- flop deck, known as 'the blob'. There is a gazebo on the Great Lawn, de- signed for weddings or other festive events, or a place to sit and relax while touring the gardens. The newly-constructed Wyatt Visitors Pavilion Complex has 33,000 square feet of space available for meet- ings, exhibits, classes and special events. The Entry Pavilion has a large expanse of light-fi ltering glass walls and a fi ber- glass ceiling. There is also a Café Cart and a de- lightfully stocked Garden Gift Shop. A farmhouse complex that dates to 1886 was donated to the garden and has been used for the offi ces and gift shop until this month upon the opening of the new Visitors Pavilion. Admission is $8 for adults with some dis- counts available. The Botanical Garden is lo- cated at 536 N. Eastern Blvd. (Business 95), Fayetteville.
