Upon arrival, we were informed that one of their children had been ill with the stomach bug since the day before. We ended up spend- ing the holiday with their entire family (including three kids, both parents and a grand- parent) sick and run- ning to the bathroom. Once home, all three of my children got the stomach bug. My wife and I will get it soon, no doubt. Is it wrong of me to be extremely upset with the family we visited for not notifying us immediately when their first child fell ill so WE could decide if we should visit? I feel it was disrespectful to keep that information from us. I feel as though we are all now unnecessarily suf- fering due to their selfish desire not to miss out on a Christmas visit. Any advice? —FuriousDad DEAR DAD »These hosts absolutely should have given you a heads up about their child's illness, but before you confront them with your fury, please take a moment to consider what it was like for them: Every member of their household was sick while they were hosting a family of five in their home. You should thank them for their hospitality in such challenging cir- cumstances and ask them (good-naturedly) to notify you if something similar happens in the future. DEAR AMY » I am 18 years old and live with my parents. My sister is 22 and she lives with us periodically, usually for a few weeks at a time. She has an anxiety disorder and several other mental health issues. She simply can't handle life sometimes, but she will not seek treatment. When she is at home, she yells and screams. She verbally abuses every family member and more than once has gotten physically violent to the point where the police were called. Recently she hit me in the face. My parents won't kick her o ut becaus e she is unstable and they fear she may hurt herself. She insists that we should not get angry with her because she is ill, but I'm at the end of my rope. I no longer feel sympathy or love for her. I don't want to just take her abuse. Am I a terrible person? Should I just accept her behavior because she is sick? — Angry Sister DEAR SISTER » You are not a terrible person. You (and your parents) are experiencing the tough reality of life with a family member who has untreated mental illness. Because your sis- ter will not seek help, yo u r pa re nt s s ho ul d se t boundaries and introduce consequences for some of your sister's choices. For instance, if she keeps bouncing back home, they should insist that she can't stay at home unless she seeks treatment. Your folks must pursue profes- sional help and support for the whole family.
