The Frank Capra-directed 1946 movie used to be shown much, much more, when the copy- right had lapsed and the picture had fallen into the public domain ... meaning that any station could show it without having to pay a studio to do so. In the early 1990s, Re- public Pictures (whose logo you'll see at the start of the film's NBC broadcasts) reasserted the rights it had to the story that inspired the movie, Philip Van Doren Stern's "The Greatest Gift." That gave Republic a hold on the entire film, then it pacted with NBC in an exclusive deal — now over- seen by Paramount, which acquired Republic and its screen properties afterward, and which also has issued the more recent home-video releases of "It's a Wonder- ful Life."
