Ireceivedawonderful e-mail from a colleague of mine a few days ago. The last time I saw her was at a church convention; she asked me to pray for both feet and one knee as she was having chronic pain in each location. She ex- perienced relief in her feet at once; the knee not so much. I found myself tell- ing her she must tell Abba God she receives her heal- ing each day as the enemy of all life tries to steal it by introducing doubt into the process of this progressive healing. I say "found my- self" because this is not something I typically pray or say. Yet our God has a habit of getting glory for Himself whenever we obey His promptings — even when stepping outside our comfort zone to do it. My friend announces her feet felt better each day until now fully healed. The knee is still proceeding. The span from Janu- ary 6 to the first (movable) day of Lent is tradition- ally known as Epiphany season. The Greek word means to manifest or material- ize in practical reality. The events associated with this season in Christ are the visit from the Wise Men, Jesus' baptism, and the Wedding at Cana. In each case God does something big-time to announce Himself but the irreduc- ible human element is obe- dience against a preposter- ous backdrop. For example, pagan as- trologers follow a mov- ing star hundreds of miles — on instructions from a God they do not recog- nize — to a stable where they instinctively recog- nize the Son of the Father. They receive the revela- tion only after obeying the "totally out there" instruc- tion, and their next obe- dience — avoiding Herod — saves their lives and the Baby. In another instance Jesus' cousin John is asked to baptize One he knows outranks him in the heav- enly hierarchy by a fac- tor of infinity. John de- murs until Jesus personal- izes the request to "fulfil all righteousness." When John obeys the heavens open and the voice of God is heard. Finally we find Jesus attending a wedding — nothing wrong with that — but hardly the set- ting for a grand manifes- tation of power. He even declares it — when asked — to be nei- ther the time nor the place; yet His mother in- structs the servants to do whatever He commands. When they obey by pre- senting Him with thirty- gallon jugs of water He transforms water into wine. By the way, this is not ordinary wine, but the best they have ever tasted. Only those guests who have obeyed long stand- ing commandments from God to avoid drunken-ness are sober enough to rec- ognize and enjoy what has been held until the end of the feast. Obedience to God is not complex, just nerve-wrack- ingly outside the box. It re- quires suspension of judg- ment. It calls us to evalu- ate circumstances through the God we know rather than judging Him through our circumstances. It commands response to a counter-intuitive di- rective. (You want me to what?) But what have we to lose; are we doing so well on our own? Our democratically produced efforts give us riots and assassinated cops, an eco- nomic system in contin- ued disease, a lawless gov- ernment, and the crises and disintegrations within our own families. Our God promises to teach us plainly and on the spot (Matt. 10 and Luke 21) what to do and say; we need only obey clearly un- derstood directives. What have we really got to lose by letting Him work in us? And what we gain when we say, "Go ahead, Lord, manifest yourself in re- sponse to my obedience?" Diana and I celebrated our anniversary at Dis- neyland a couple of weeks back. I planned a late flight home so we could spend our last day on im- pulse, but the flight was repeatedly postponed; ar- riving home at two in the morning after a long drive from Sacramento was downright dangerous at my age. I followed my own advice and thanked God for His blessing before I had any clue what that blessing might be — that is the essence of a Eucha- ristic/Thanks-filled heart. Having given thanks I heard and obeyed His word to check in early even though expecting a four hour wait at the air- port. Having checked in we were given a much ear- lier flight — at no charge because ours was delayed. We arrived home before Midnight and I got to in- troduce a Buddhist man to the Lord because I "hap- pened to be" in line one space ahead of him for that earlier flight. We had a wonderful time and God manifested Himself — not because of our obedience but through it. A blessed Epiphany to those who know God and to those who need to meet Him. SUNRISE BIBLE FELLOWSHIP Professor to discuss end of time Sunday By Nicole Winfield The Associated Press VATICANCITY Angelina Jo- lie has met with rock stars, refugees and royalty. The actress, director and U.N. special envoy added pontiff to the list on Thurs- day, meeting with Pope Francis briefly after screen- ing her film "Unbroken" to some Vatican officials and ambassadors. The Vatican said Jolie and two of her children were on hand at the Pontif- ical Academy for Sciences to screen the film, which tells the story of Louis Zam- perini, an Olympic track star whose B-24 bomber crashed in the Pacific dur- ing World War II. He and two crewmates survived on a raft for 47 days, only to be captured by the Japanese. Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi said the film shows "posi- tive human and spiritual values, in particular for- giveness." Francis didn't watch the film but exchanged a few words with Jolie afterward when she was brought up to the Apostolic Palace — along with the children, her brother and a cast member. The meeting was ar- ranged by the Argen- tine head of the pontifi- cal academy, Monsignor Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo, who is a good friend of the pope's. Vatican photos of the encounter show Jolie, dressed in a demure black suit — as papal protocol requires — gently clasping Francis' hands and smil- ing in the silk brocaded "Throne Room," where Francis usually greets heads of state. Lombardi stressed that the meeting wasn't a formal audience per se, but rather a brief and cordial greeting in which the pope paid partic- ular attention to Jolie and the children, giving them Vatican souvenirs. "It all lasted just a few minutes, even though it was naturally very significant for those present," he said. "Unbroken" has sought to appeal to faith-based audiences, given that Zam- perini was a Christian in- spirational speaker who at- tributed his survival to his faith. Though the film doesn't focus on Zamperini's Chris- tianity, its North American box-office success ($90.7 million in two weeks) has been partly based on the in- terest of movie-going faith- ful.
