Monday, October 10, 2011 – Daily News 5A Tough Enough to Wear Pink Fights Breast Cancer with Red Bluff Roots One woman in eight either has or will develop breast cancer in her lifetime, and the National Breast Cancer Foundation estimates that each year, over 200,000 women will be diag- nosed with breast cancer and over 40,000 will die. If detected early, the five-year survival rate for breast cancer exceeds 96%. According to the American Cancer Society, "…mammography is the single most effective method of early detection since it can identify cancer several years before physical symptoms develop. Treatment is more successful when cancer is discovered early." Enter Terry Wheatley. Terry (a local Red Bluff High graduate) is the founder of Tough Enough to Wear Pink (TETWP). After a battle with breast cancer herself in 2004, Terry involved the rodeo and western communities in the cause, and Tough Enough was born. The grassroots effort has brought professional rodeo (Terry's hus- band and son are both well known in the rodeo world) and the western community together to fight breast cancer and focus on the need for a cure. According to TETWP, "…to date, the campaign has raised $5 million dollars for breast cancer charities, much of which stays right in the community." Locally, Red Bluff Tough Enough activities have raised over $100,000 since 2007 and in 2010, the Red Bluff RoundUp Association/Rodeo was the fifth highest fundraiser in the country for TETWP! Key partners in the effort are the Red Bluff RoundUp Association, Red Bluff Rotary, Red Bluff Soroptomist Club, Tehama Shooters, Safeway Foundation, Pacific Farms, Haleakala Ranch, Taco Bell, Sun Oaks, Cross Petroleum, and many other local businesses and individuals. Mammograms are among the best early detection methods, yet according to the American Cancer Society, 13 million U.S. women 40 years of age or older have never had a mammogram. St. Elizabeth Community Hospital, through generous funding and community donations, provides mammograms to patients who lack health insurance and cannot afford them.
