Rodgers Theater For the past several weeks volunteers have been working on the in- stallation of the concrete floor at the theater. For those who don't know, there has been a lot of work that has already been completed. The the- ater has received a new roof, heating and air con- ditioning, new men's and women's restrooms, a new façade, which included new windows, doors and tile siding and new stucco in front. There is still work to be done and if you are inter- ested in volunteering you may call Tony Cardenas at (530) 624-5086. There is hope that sometime this year it will be ready for use but funds are still needed. If you are interested in making a donation to the theater project you may send checks made out to Corning Community Foundation and mail it to the chamber at P.O. Box 871, Corning CA 96021. Also, if you would like to rent the theater marquee for a week that money goes toward the theater. The sign goes up for one week and the cost is $25 from Monday evening to Mon- day, weather permitting. You may call the chamber at 824-5550 to make res- ervations. When you have an event you would like to publicize it is a great way for people in the commu- nity to know about it. Stocks continued to re- treatfromtheirrecentrecord highs on Tuesday, weighed down by an ongoing plunge in the price of oil. Bonds ral- lied as investors bought the safest assets, pushing the yield on the benchmark 10- year Treasury note back be- low 2 percent for the first time in three months. The moves suggest that investors have little con- fidence the U.S. economy will continue to grow at the 5 percent annual pace reached in the final quar- ter of last year. As a conse- quence, company earnings will suffer. The reason for the gloomy prognosis is a slowdown in growth else- where in world, particu- larly Europe. The slump in the price of oil, which dropped well below $50 a barrel Tuesday from $107 in June, has also prompted a sharp shift in investor sentiment.
