16 UCW NOVEMBER 11-17, 2009 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM Can you imagine a child who has never owned a hair brush, a toy ball or even a pencil? Believe it or not, that is real life for millions of children worldwide. This year, U.S. kids are working to change that — and they need your help. Through Operation Christmas Child, you and your family can play an important role in helping children around the world who are suffering for many reasons. National Collec- tion Week is Nov. 16-23, 2009. Operation Christmas Child delivers shoe- boxes packed with school supplies, toys, necessity items and often a hand-written note of encouragement. OCC is a kids- helping-kids project! "I think it is special to these kids that I don't know them and yet I'm giving them a gift. They probably think, ' Wow, she cares and doesn't know me,'" said 12-year-old Kassie Miller, who packed 401 shoebox gifts in 2008. This year her goal is to pack 500 Operation Christmas Child shoebox gifts. Since 1993, Operation Christmas Child has hand-delivered shoebox gifts to more than 69 million children in more than 130 countries. Staff and volunteers use ships, trucks, buses, trains, airplanes, helicopters, boats, camels, and even dog sleds to reach suffering children with the gifts. Samaritan's Purse uses tracking technology that allows you to "follow your box" to the country where it will be hand-delivered to a child in need. To register shoe box gifts and find out what country they are delivered to, use the EZ Give donation form found at www.samari- tanspurse.org. To learn how to pack and send an Operation Christmas Child shoebox gift, call (828) 262-1980 or visit www.samaritanspurse.org. Although National Collection Week is Nov. 16-23, shoebox gifts are collected all year. )D\HWWHYLOOH7HFKQLFDO &RPPXQLW\&ROOHJH ZZZID\WHFKFFHGX C ampus to C o ampus It might just be November, but at Fayetteville Technical Community College (FTCC) it is springtime.
