WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM 14 UCW NOVEMBER 11-17 2009 Saturd CHAIRMAN The MAN Speaks Speaks This is a call to all local entrepreneurs and business people to help develop the next genera- tion of business in our community! I am really pleased in my capacity as chair- man that I have had the unique oppor tunity to work with Dr. Mohammad Bhuiyan of Fayette- ville State's Center for Entrepreneurship. Dr. Bhuiyan has par tnered with the Univer- sity of Syracuse to bring their model of a Youth Entrepreneurship Conference to Fayetteville on Saturday, Nov. 21 at the Doubletree Hotel on Cedar Creek Road. This first time event is a full-day conference designed to teach and inspire young adults interested in entrepreneurship. There will be seminars, networking oppor tunities, and an eleva- tor speech competition with a $1,000 first place prize! As for the call for assistance, we are looking for volunteer en- trepreneurs to attend a networking event with the par ticipants and then stay for lunch with our keynote speakers. The time commit- ment is only from 10:30am to 1:30 pm that day. If you are interested in par ticipating, please contact Todd Lyden at the Chamber at tlyden@fayettevillencchamber.org or 910-484-4242 ext. 235. Dan Dederick Call for Volunteers - Youth Entrepreneurship Conference BUSINESS The Spotlight Spotlight Has Casual Attire Affected Our Work? Read a blog from myragan.com, a web site that focuses on all things communication and marketing, and tell us what you think at wallen@fayettevillencchamber.org. A vintage photo reminded me of how much times have changed. Two men and some children posed as they were about to go sledding. The remarkable thing is that the men were wearing suits. Indeed, back in the day — my parents' day — men and women used to dress up for dinners, parties, even picnics. Suits, hats, dresses, heels —you'd fi nd yourself in a sea of them at many a social occasion. By the time I started to work, women were scorning painful high heels for the trek from train station and bus to the offi ce in favor of comfort- able running and walking shoes. Even a few men picked up on the trend, sporting clashing loafers at the bottom of three-piece pinstripes. Then came "casual day," when offi ce worker bees could wear what was described in the policy as "business casual attire"—no halters, t-shirts, shorts, sandals or jeans, please. Next came "casual every day." For years, we've been wearing business casual, loosely interpreted, every day of the week. I've always loved it, prefer- ring comfort to style, but at the same time I don't think I take enough pride in my appearance. I've wondered before, and still do, if "busi- ness casual" has done some harm in how we act, regard and treat others. Lately, it's hit home how the casual environment encourages employees to treat each other more, well, casually. That doesn't have to be a bad thing. Sometimes, however, I see a familiarity and a certain contempt that comes with that familiarity — with neither conducive to mutual professional respect. People in power suits aren't automatically perceived as all-wise and all-knowing, and a leader like Steve Jobs isn't pishtushed just because he shows up in shirt and slacks. But something about being well dressed does seem to promote a touch of respect for the wearer, something we could use more of in our day-to-day, down-in-the-trenches business world.
