The Lady Spartans started the season 8-6 and then clicked like no team in recent history, reeling off 23 straight wins to close the season. The last victory was a dramatic nail-biter in the Northern Section Division 3 championship, as the Lady Spartans won 4-3 in extra innings to beat the last team to defeat them, Enterprise. The Lady Spartans were: Bailey Akins, Shelby Baccala, Monica Baker, Stefanie Brunello, Vanessa Byrd, McKenzie Colgate, Allyson Drury, Ashleigh Fox, Cheyanne Grannes, Alyssa Heth- coat, Sam Jones, Jenny McCluskey, Molly Mur- phy, Hailee Nicholls and Tayler Zazueta. They were coached by Thomas and Wade Souza. Another group of Lady Spartans brought home a section championship in the fall. The girls golf team put everything together on Nov. 3 at the Table Moun- tain Golf Course in Oroville to take home the Northern Section title. The win included Sofia Frantz shooting a career- best round of 83 to win the individual section title. The team didn't exist five years ago until Elena Tomasetti worked on start- ing a program. The Lady Spartans were: Abbie Famborough, Sofia Frantz, Summer Frantz, Emilie Louisell, Autumn Poole, Monse Saucedo, Izzy Seera, Molly Shea, Maryn Spangler and Yazmin Vil- lalobos. Red Bluff's Kayla Thayer finally got the monkey off of her back and won not just one section title, but two of them. Thayer won the discus and shot put at the North- ern Section Track and Field Championships in her third appearance in the finals. Among other local no- table sports happenings in 2014 was Corning coach Bob Hall received a presti- gious Model Coach Award from the Model Coach Award from the Califor- nia Interscholastic Feder- ation. In July the Red Bluff Lit- tle League Major softball All-Stars won the District 1 championship. The team was: Mac Clement, Cassie Drury, Bai- ley Diggs, Aliyah Hethcoat, Alycia Mackey, Regan Par- kinson, Emma Peterson, Karli Rainwater, Taylor Sousa, Faith Tatro and Ri- ana Zepeda. Athletes FROM PAGE 1 ELISE AMENDOLA — THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Sacramento Kings forward Rudy Gay (8) drives against Boston Celtics forward Jae Crowder (99) in the first half Wednesday in Boston. By Ken Powtak The Associated Press BOSTON The Boston Celt- ics went at each other hard for a couple of days. It must have worked because they didn't let down against Sacramento. Jared Sullinger scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to help the Celt- ics snap a four-game los- ing streak with a 106-84 victory over the Kings on Wednesday afternoon. Known for blowing big second-half leads a hand- ful of times this season, the Celtics coasted to the win. "That was the best game physically we've played, I thought, as a team," Boston coach Brad Stevens said. "I was a little nervous coming into today because we had two hard practices, where there were very few fouls called and there was a real emphasis on getting into bodies and getting into the ball and competing and growing as a team by com- peting against each other. Hopefully, we can build on that." Kelly Olynyk added 15 points, Jae Crowder 12 and Marcus Smart 11 for Bos- ton, which never trailed and avoided matching its longest losing streak this season. Darren Collison and Carl Landry each scored 14 points to lead the Kings, who lost for the ninth time in 11 games. "Everything was just off tonight," Kings coach Ty- rone Corbin said. "It's a disappointing effort, disap- pointing loss and we have to get better." Sacramento forward DeMarcus Cousins was ejected after collecting his second technical of the game midway into the final quarter. He finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds. "We have to come to- gether as a team — my- self included," Cousins said. "I'm the leader of this team. I have to get my stuff together. I can't have games like I had tonight. We have to come together and figure this thing out." Cousins, who set two screens on Smart, was battling for position for a rebound with the rookie guard. He then grabbed him by the arm and flung him to the floor. Smart got up and yelled at Cousins before they were separated. Each received a technical and Cousins was ejected because it was his second of the game. His other came in the first quarter. Cousins headed out the tunnel near the Kings' bench to a loud chorus of boos. "He knows I'm not going to back down," Smart said. "To be honest, I don't know why I got the technical." Tip-Ins Kings: Corbin talked be- fore the game about hav- ing the "interim" tag re- cently lifted by manage- ment. "You can relax on that part of it and focus more on the games and who we have and what we feel we'll be with this group for the rest of the year," he said. "We can move for- ward on what we want to be, trying to grow on both ends of the floor." Corbin replaced fired coach Mi- chael Malone on Dec. 15.
