In August at the International Archery Association's champion- ship in Yankton, South Dakota, Red Bluff's Paige Pearce became a world champion, setting a world record in the process. The 19-year-old lends back to the community by teaching youth archery. Beverley Anderson-Abbs lives in Tehama County, but became a Canadian national champion this summer. Anderson-Abbs, who grew up in Canada, won the Wild Rose Brewery 50-kilometer Ultramar- athon at the Canadian Road Rac- ing Championships. Anderson-Abbs went on to fin- ish 10th at the World Champion- ship in Qatar. Tehama County had not one, not two, but three state champi- ons at the California High School Rodeo Association Finals in June. For the second consecutive year Red Bluff's Chelsey Bushnell won the state breakaway roping title. Colby Demo, from Los Moli- nos, became the state bull riding champion, adding to a year that included a title at the Challenge of Champions. Wyatt Brown won the state's steer wrestling title. It was a good year for state ti- tles in Corning. The Corning Senior League team of 15- and 16-year-olds took the torch of Tehama County's Lit- tle League and ran with it. Corning won the Northern Cal- ifornia state championship and a trip to the Western Regional Tournament, where they lost in the semifinals, just two games from the Senior League World Series. The team included Rylan Casey, Trent Conoly, Seth Danielson, Wy- att Haydon, Isaiah Jones, Chad McFall, Brady Meeds, Dustin Messmer, Noah Miller, Chance Nelson, Nolan Peterson, Ryan Waldon, Michael Wold and Devin Wunsch. They were coached by Evan White and Jeremy Ross. Corning 11-year-old Hannah Pritchard also became a state champion. She won the NorCal Level 4 title in gymnastics in November following a grueling training schedule. The Red Bluff Jr. Spartans Pee- wee cheerleading team, of 9- and 10-year-olds, won the Northern California state championship at the NorCalFed State Cheer Com- petition. The team was: Shelby Arel- lano, Jaime Bailey, Macenzie Bailey, Aaliyah Chavez, Yasmin Chavez, Camryn Clement, Bade- gech Dittner, Makenzie Ferguson, Kirra Ferreira, Lily Morales, Al- exandra Strole, Allie VanOrnum, and Alexandra Vicuna. They were coached by Cori Dittner and Me- lissa Sides and trained by Yessie Castillo, Carley Clement, Jasmine Dittner and Karlie Lopez. In prep sports the Corning Car- dinals boys basketball team de- fended their Northern Section Di- vision IV title with a 56-49 win over Gridley. Corning finished the season 24- 5, falling in the first round of the state playoffs. The Cardinals, coached by the legendary Bill Mache, were: Joe Aguirre, Jesse Bennett, Alex Da- vila, Manny Garcia, Nick Hoag, Quincy Jones, Chayce Maday, Chance Nelson, Tyelar Nelson, Brandon Olsen, Nathan Peter, Erik Rios, Durante Rodriguez, Michael Shoemaker and Anton Torres.
