ByJudyLin TheAssociatedPress SACRAMENTO » Business groups trying to overturn a new Califor- nia law that bans single-use plas- tic bags said Monday that they've collected more than enough sig- natures to put their referendum on the November 2016 ballot. If the referendum qualifies, the nation's first statewide ban on sin- gle-use plastic bags will be sus- pended until voters weigh in, ef- fectively buying plastic bag man- ufacturers more time. The plastic bag manufacturing trade group American Progres- sive Bag Alliance said it was turn- ing in more than 800,000 petition signatures to county registrars by Monday's deadline to qualify the referendum. The group needs about 505,000 valid signatures to qualify, and it will be weeks be- fore counties make that determi- nation through random sampling. He was 73. Eliggi, who was a Vietnam-era Army veteran and retired me- chanic, was appointed to the City Council in August 2013, filling a vacancy left by a resignation ear- lier that year. In October of this year, Eliggi submitted his resignation from his seat on the council citing health reasons. Suren Patel was appointed Dec. 16 to serve out the remainder of the seat's term, which expires in December 2016. Red Bluff Union High School class of 1998 graduate Adam Pa- pendick is scheduled to appear on today's airing of "The Price is Right." Locally it will be shown on CBS affiliate KHSL at 10 a.m. On Monday, Jan. 5 Red Bluff resident Lisa Vance is sched- uled to appear on "Let's Make a Deal." The game show airs daily at 9 a.m. on KHSL. While Papendick, who now lives in Southgate outside of Los Angeles, couldn't reveal whether he won any prizes, he was se- lected to "come on down" and won his way to play a game on stage with host Drew Carey. "It's definitely one of those ex- periences you kind of have to ex- perience to know what it's like," Papendick said in a phone inter- view with the Daily News. Papendick said he's watched "The Price is Right" since he was a child and Bob Barker was the host. Although not a huge fan, he went along with some friends who had tickets to a taping. After interviewing with one of the show's producers, Papendick said he felt lucky and confident he might get called down. Papendick said he didn't rec- ognize the game he had to play on stage and relied upon his friend, a huge fan of the show, to help him out with his answers. As for the big wheel, Papen- dick said he always thought other contestants were weak when they didn't give it a good turn. "It's a lot heavier than I thought it was," Papendick joked. TELEVISION Localscompeteongameshows RBHSgradontoday's'ThePriceisRight' "Saint Anne's Reel" and "Rag time Annie" top the list of a long string of favorite songs played by Loosely Strung, a Tehama County band that has spanned more than 30 years of perfor- mances. Coming together in the 1970s, the group was previously known as the Bend Fiddle Jammers. "Boil Them Cabbage Down" is one of the first songs the band ever played and has stood the test of time. The music has heard only a few changes over the years, although the group has recently added a couple of old western swing songs to its line-up. The band generally consists of Pat Scott on fiddle, Becky Huskey on vocals, accordion and an occasional mandolin, Tex Ash on bass and Rich Reyn- olds who plays the guitar and sings. Loosely Strung is a versa- tile band. It has performed throughout Tehama County for many benefits, social and pri- vate events, as well as playing a significant part in the West- ern Open Fiddle Championships each fall. When asked why they play Scott, who is the official histo- rian of the group responded, "I'm a social musician, so that's what I do." "Its great fun, it's great for my brain and great for my hands," Reynolds said. "If you get four people playing and three people singing in har- mony, it's something you can't describe to others, you have to experience it." Additionally, Loosely Strung gives time to perform at three different retirement homes in Red Bluff each month — Red Bluff Health Care, Lassen House and Brentwood Skilled Nursing. At times the players bring along Huskey's fiddle kids from An- telope and Berrendos schools, which gives the young people a great opportunity to play while the audiences love seeing and hearing the talented youngsters perform. A good number of the tunes they play in retirement venues is music the residents remember from their younger days — which tends to have positive effects on folks with memory issues. Reyn- olds said he has witnessed cases where someone may not be able to carry on a conversation, but once the band plays a familiar song, they are able to sing every word right along. "Music is an art and it affects people differently in different ways, but it is fun to watch peo- ple when they hear a tune they like, they will smile, tap their feet and nod their heads," he said.
