If we re- ally stop and think about it, our personal everyday life probably sets the tone of our thinking each day. That can pose major prob- lems depending upon the situations that develop throughout the day. The first circumstances that take place in the begin- ning of a new day often prove to be frustrating. For example, you step out of bed, and your feet land squarely in a mess left by the family dog. As you try to hop towards the bath- room to reach some paper towels, you stumble over a toy train and twist your ankle! You finally make it to work, and hope to set- tle into a work related rou- tine. However, your mind is still swirling over your feelings of mismanage- ment within your home. Life has a way of getting us off track, making it dif- ficult to keep our focus on things of eternal value. I know we don't want to be stoic, a person who is out of touch with reality. Life happens, and difficult and even tragic things enter all of our lives. So that my readers can fully relate to this topic, let us review together some of the circumstances and situations in life. Thanksgiving, Christmas, birthday celebrations, fam- ily reunions, weddings, di- vorce, death, funerals, job loss, job promotions, mov- ing, serious illness, debt, and all interpersonal rela- tionships, all join together to make people stressed, depressed, emotionally up- set, etc. Let's think about all of this logically. If we are born again Christians, we already have the abil- ity to live above the mun- dane parts of this life. Even though this is true, we must choose to fol- low the patterns set forth in Scripture which show us the upward way in liv- ing life here and now. It's always been a choice as to whether or not we will choose to live life God's way or our way. During my own times of limiting God's interven- tion in my life, I've been able to change (by God's grace), and begin walk- ing through any nega- tive circumstances by fol- lowing the leading of the Holy Spirit! In the natural realm of living we do best when simply cleaning up trouble, or taking care of the job needed, and mov- ing forward with a spirit- filled mentality. If our mind remains on stress, fear, anger, etc., we are caught in the self-mental- ity mode again. One example is the need to do laundry. If we look at the job as an all-con- suming task our think- ing will be all about self- mentality. Yet if we just get busy and do it, we can then turn our thoughts to eternal matters that count for life, such as: the min- istry God has called us to (for every Christian is to minister the message and life of the gospel of Je- sus Christ), our precious children, friends and oth- ers God has brought into our life. Another exam- ple: If our day is mainly filled with an eight- hour job outside the home, we are to do our job in a God honoring manner. When the job is finished for the day (the practical side of things), then we have the remaining hours to center upon eternity. We can also weave eternity into our day, wherever we are. How wonderful! What opportu- nities we have in living for Jesus. The struggle can still re- main, pulling us down- ward instead of heaven- ward. Satan and his de- mons love to side-track all Christians from the joy and fulfillment that is available to us. But, let us think about the laun- dry again. When I was a child, we did lots of our dirty clothes on a scrub board. Then we hung ev- erything on the clothes line in the bright sun and fresh air. Likewise, when we take our problems to Jesus, it's like hanging all our troubles up on the line of heaven. Every trial, sor- row and mess suddenly be- comes clean, and fresh. No earthly detergent works on our sorrows, tri- als and tribulations. To- day all Christians are be- ing attacked by satanic in- fluences. Yet our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ will continually cleanse us with His blood (See 1 John 1:9). We desperately need to study the Word of God, meditate upon His Word, seek His face in prayer, and worship Him in spirit and truth, and fellow- ship with other believers through faithful church at- tendance. Sometimes Christians are not keenly aware of Sa- tan's plan to keep their minds cluttered. Being aware of this strategy of the devil helps us triumph over it. May we truly set our mind upon all that is of eternal worth. "Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth" (Colossians 3:2). Vandals shattered the stained-glass windows and scrawled their names on the thick walls during decades of frigid relations between the Roman Catho- lic Church and Cuba's com- munist government. But a new chain-link fence surrounds the build- ing, protecting it for a fu- ture that once seemed un- imaginable. The church is planning to restore the building to its former glory, along with more a dozen more churches, parish houses and other buildings, as part of a quiet reconciliation be- tween the Catholic Church and the Cuban government that has brought relations to a historic high point this Christmas. Authorities have also given permission for the construction of the first two new churches in more than five decades. After years of bridge- building behind closed doors, the Cuba-Vatican rapprochement burst into the headlines last week when the U.S. government credited Pope Francis with helping facilitate the se- cret reconciliation talks be- tween the U.S. and Cuba. Francis wrote the leaders of both countries to invite them to resolve their differ- ences. "We ask the Lord to con- tinue moving forward this process of reconciliation and peace that Pope Fran- cis has favored and sup- ported," Cuban Cardinal Jaime Ortega said in his homily at a Christmas Eve Mass in Havana's colonial cathedral. Church officials and ex- perts said the mediation and the renovation and con- struction of churches were essential parts of a funda- mental shift in the dealings between the church and the communist state, which has been hostile toward religion for decades. Developments "are head- ing in the same direction: a new chapter in the gen- eral and economic history of Cuba, and also church- state relations," said En- rique Lopez Oliva, a reli- gious historian at the Uni- versity of Havana. The church and the Cu- ban state were in a state of open hostility in the years immediately after the 1959 revolution that put Fidel Castro in power, a time when some anti-Castro mi- litias used churches to store weapons. Some priests were sent to labor camps. Churches were confiscated and used by the government as warehouses, bakeries, dining halls or schools. Openly practicing Catho- lics were barred from hold- ing public office and mem- bership in the Communist Party. For the faithful, even winning admission to a uni- versity could be difficult, and the ubiquitous neigh- borhood watch committees kept an especially watchful eye on them. But a thaw began in the 1990s as Cuba removed a constitutional clause de- claring the country an of- ficially atheist state. Pope John Paul II paid a momen- tous visit in 1998 and urged a new era of openness be- tween Cuba and the world. After Benedict XVI visited in 2012, Cuba made Good Friday an official holiday. Christmas decora- tions are increasingly visi- ble in office buildings and homes each year. However, the church has made lit- tle headway in its hope for more access to state-con- trolled airwaves and per- mission to run religious schools. Earlier this year the ed- itors of a church magazine that has been one of the few independent publications in the country resigned, cit- ing internal pressures from some who felt it was becom- ing too political. According to a church member with direct knowl- edge of the matter, the handover of properties was mentioned during negotia- tions between Castro and Cardinal Ortega in July 2010, when the church me- diated the release of a group of jailed dissidents. The properties include two churches, a parochial house and other real es- tate that was being used as stores in Santiago, Cuba's second-largest city.
