And in a third case, more than $33,000 of government property went missing at Camp Roberts in Monterey and San Luis Obispo coun- ties. The audit blames poor inventory controls. The cases are based on whistle-blower complaints. The moonlighting em- ployee at the Depart- ment of Industrial Rela- tions resigned after man- agement discovered his second job. The depart- ment said in response to the audit it put a memo in the employee's person- nel file should he attempt to return to state employ- ment. It also put stron- ger telecommuting poli- cies in place. The employee accused of taking proceeds from the surplus furniture said she didn't have time to turn in the money and took it home for safekeeping, ac- cording to the audit. It recommends the case be handed over to the local district attorney. The Military Depart- ment, which was responsi- ble for the missing govern- ment property, has made "considerable progress" in fixing its shortcomings, but it still needs a bar-code sys- tem for all expendable in- ventory, according to the audit. Audit FROM PAGE 1 Rush Limbaugh doesn't want a black James Bond Rush Limbaugh says (always the three most anticipated words with which to start a story) Idris Elba can't play James Bond because he's black. Leaked emails from the Sony hacking scandal showed the studio is already planning for when Daniel Craig steps aside from the ongoing role, and British actor Elba was mentioned as a possibility. "James Bond is a total concept put together by Ian Fleming. He was white and Scottish. Period. That is who James Bond is," Limbaugh recently said on his radio show. "But now (they are) suggest- ing that the next James Bond should be Idris Elba, a black Briton, rather than a white from Scotland. But that's not who James Bond is." Star report 1776 The British suffered a major defeat in the Battle of Trenton during the Revolutionary War. 1799 Former President George Washington was eulogized by Col. Henry Lee as "first in war, first in peace and first in the hearts of his country- men." 1908 Jack Johnson became the first African- American boxer to win the world heavyweight championship as he defeated Canadian Tommy Burns in Sydney, Australia. 1966 Kwanzaa was first cel- ebrated. 1996 6-year-old beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey was found beaten and strangled in the basement of her family's home in Boul- der, Colorado. (To date, the slaying remains unsolved.) 2004 More than 230,000 people, mostly in south- ern Asia, were killed by a 100-foot-high tsunami triggered by a 9.1-mag- nitude earthquake be- neath the Indian Ocean. Birthdays Actor Caroll Spin- ney (Big Bird on TV's "Sesame Street") is 81. Record producer Phil Spector is 75. "Amer- ica's Most Wanted" host John Walsh is 69. Baseball Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith is 60. Hu- morist David Sedaris is 58. Rock musician Lars Ulrich is 51. Actor-singer Jared Leto is 43.
