Jerry Brown Tuesday urging him to declare an official State of Emer- gency for Tehama County. The emergency would cover the damages caused from flood- ing that resulted from a pair of storms, first on Dec. 3 and then over Dec. 10-11. "I have surveyed the roads and infrastructure in the county and have personally seen the damage," Nielsen writes in his letter. "It is particularly sad to see so many homes decorated for Christmas with the lights out and destroyed furniture in the front yards. "It is heartbreaking to see the destruction caused by the rain we need so much. Ide Adobe State Historic Park of- ficials and volunteers hosted a Christmas party Saturday — 1850s style. Park-goers stepped back in time during the 37th annual Pio- neer Christmas Party and made rag dolls, tin-punched Christ- mas tree ornaments, wrote Christmas messages and made hand-dipped candles. A trio of Red Bluff High School students, including Wil- liam Yates, a senior, volunteered their time and spent the day teaching people how to make those hand-dipped candles. "It's fun," Yates said as light rain fell over the park. "It's a lit- tle cold, but you can't do any- thing about that." One candle maker, Frank Weston, after he dipped a wick attached to a thin tree branch into bucket of hot wax a few times, said his ancestors "would appreciate this." The annual Pioneer Christ- mas Party is the longest-run- ning event at the park, said Debbie Chakarun, state park interpreter. And admission fees will benefit Ide Adobe Interpre- tive Association and park pro- grams. "This is a much smaller, more intimate event this year," Cha- karun said. She added that the Christ- mas traditions celebrated in the 1850s gold rush era were sim- pler compared to today's cele- brations. "It was a lot more hand made, smaller things and getting to- gether," she said. Other activities included making pomanders, sewing cards and the breaking of the Christmas bag, which is similar to a pinata. "Many of the Christmas tra- ditions that we celebrate to- day were just getting estab- lished during the 1850s," said Judy Fessenden, president of the Ide Adobe Interpretive As- sociation, in a previous press release.
