Why? I am not totally sure as being an antique person myself I have not had time to search every documentation of life extension. It is true that my body does not always perform as it did during younger days. Brain thoughts have continued to gather a number of mem- ories which may or may not be easy to draw from a person's brain file. We who have added a number of years to our youth are often seen walking a few dozen blocks of exer- cise nearly every day. Some of us are encouraged to wear a hat to pro- tect us from the sun's rays. I am one of those chosen to pop one on my head. The first one I popped on my head messed up my hair, the second one flopped down over my eyes and the third one clamped my head to the degree of giving me a headache. Having been encouraged by medical personnel to keep Red Bluff's heavy sun rays away from entering my body, I knew I would have to get an appropriate head garb. Oh yes, a few years back my husband presented me with an off white polyester and cotton labeled, "Headmaster." I think he wanted to be the "Head- master" until he read all the labels on the outside of the hat. Apparently he thought the buttons, the identification card, the blatant comments paint- ed on the hat were really meant for me. The following state- ments speak out loud and clear and draw the atten- tion of those who see me walking in their neigh- borhood. Their first star- tled look on their faces makes me think they will call some- one to pick up an unusual person walking the streets of Red Bluff. I simply smile as I walk by quickly so as to escape anyone's arrival in black and white car stopping to cap- ture me with a large net. Carolyn Barber ly Polished & Buffed," "Lines of True Character," 'Made the Old Fashioned Way." The final statement is printed on a tag hanging from the left side of the hat; "…GEN- UINE… ANTIQUE PER- SON …Genuine Antique People sometime lose track of their comings and goings and need help get- ting' back. My Name is: Carolyn Barber If found please return to: Hurley Barber (phone #). Okay, okay Dr. H. and Hurley, I will wear the hat! Anyway the months are Alright, so you are all dying to hear what kind of notes were attached to my current sun hat. Here goes; "GENUINE ANTIQUE PER- SON," "Been There, Done That, Can't Remember," Appraised Value Priceless," "True Class," "Frequent- Kingsley, Erickson to wed coming into the Fall season and that will soon require an umbrella and hopefully cause a little weight loss. Hmm, maybe I will take a couple of family dogs, Bella and Baxter on a walk with me to add to the interest of those noting my "hat" and fast walking. Carolyn Barber has been writing her column in the Daily News since 1992. It appears on Saturdays. She can be contacted by e-mail at hur- car@yahoo.com.
