ByJoshDubow The Associated Press ALAMEDA There have been several high-profile names talked about as potential candidates for the Oakland Raiders head coaching job in 2015. Run- ning back Latavius Mur- ray has his own: cur- rent interim coach Tony Sparano. A day after a 31-13 loss to Kansas City that dropped the Raiders to 2-12, Sparano received of vote of confidence from his players to come back next season and have the in- terim label removed from his title. That might be a long- shot considering some of the candidates being dis- cussed for the job. Still, Murray believes the Raiders would benefit from having Sparano back. "Tony's done a great job and everybody in the locker room loves his ap- proach," Murray said Mon- day. "I feel he's definitely a players' coach and we all love playing for him. We've been coming up short on some games but that def- initely doesn't change the mentality we have each week going forward." Oakland's only two wins this season have come un- der Sparano's watch and the team has remained fairly competitive despite long ago being eliminated from playoff contention. Since taking over as in- terim coach after the fir- ing of Dennis Allen dur- ing the team's bye week, Sparano's teams have lost eight games but three have been by seven points or fewer. Sparano, the 53-year- old coach who previously helped orchestrate a 10- game turnaround with the Miami Dolphins in 2008, has consistently down- played talk about his fu- ture with the Raiders. "Listen, I am 100 per- cent a glass half-full guy," Sparano said. "I'm only worried about, honestly, the Buffalo Bills right now. We just met with our play- ers and got that (Chiefs) game out of our system. We'll bounce back. I can only control the things that I can control. I can control what happens in our stadium this week- end and how our team ap- proaches this game." NFL Some Raiders players want Sparano in 2015 The brief lull in on-court action didn't affect Red Bluff. In fact, the Spartans didn't skip a beat. A more concentrated effort on the glass — es- pecially when it came to defensive rebounding — allowed Red Bluff to stone- wall Mack's second-chance shot opportunities. The combination of the ur- gency on defense with the red-hot shooting on of- fense allowed the Spartans to build and carry a 39-29 lead into the locker room at halftime. And, just like the break in action before, not even intermission could cool Red Bluff's jets. And it did little to alleviate Mack's woes. One series in the third quarter — which saw Red Bluff out-score Mack 19- 13 — exemplified the Pan- thers' troubles. Kyle Spald- ing drove hard to the bas- ket only to see his layup roll in and out. His ensu- ing putback hit back iron and another attempt by his teammate hit nothing but front iron. Three good looks, three shots that did not fall. ARCATA 69, RED BLUFF 55 The pupil got the best of the master. After falling in a 10-0 hole early to Red Bluff High School, the Arcata boys basketball team woke from its slumber and ousted the Spartans from the winner's bracket with a 69-55 win on Fri- day night. The victory in a high- octane 47th annual Jerry Paul Arcata Invitational Basketball Tournament semifinal game gave Ar- cata head coach Ryan Bisio a win over his former prep coach and current Red Bluff boss Stan Twitchell. "I tell you man, when I looked down the sideline, I'm just glad he wasn't yell- ing at me," Bisio said of Twitchell with a humon- gous smile. "He's a great coach. He's had a lot to do with developing thousands of people, and I'm one of them." Twitchell — who prowled the sidelines as Bi- sio's head coach at St. Ber- nard's — and his Spartans came out firing at tip-off with senior Joseph Bosetti (a team-high 21 points) sporting the hot hand. His pair of long-range 3-point- ers staked Red Bluff to 10-0 and Bisio knew something needed to change. Thus, a game-changing time out. "We just woke up, ba- sically," Bisio said. "We were sleepwalking. We were slow coming out of the gate, and after the first time out, we woke up a bit." Behind Russ Taylor (game-high 23 points) and Ben Albright (18) the Tigers clawed their way back into the game bit by bit. The host squad trailed 18-14 after the first quar- ter and, as the two teams headed to the locker rooms at halftime, Arcata gener- ated a 35-34 advantage. It was a lead the Tigers would not relinquish. The Spartans tried all they could to get within striking distance but Bo- setti not only ran into the stout defense of the Tigers' Connor Cox, his once siz- zling shooting touch went ice cold — arctic even — in the second half. RED BLUFF 73, EUREKA 46 The Spartans opened the tournament with a win over Eureka Thursday. Red Bluff dominated the boards at both ends and went on a 33-9 run that be- gan at the end of the first quarter and stretched into the middle of the third. Red Bluff (6-1) returns home for the Holiday Clas- sic. They open with Del Norte 7 p.m. Thursday. "Philosophically we needed to make a deci- sion," D'Alessandro said. "What are we going to do, how are we going to play." Malone went 39-67 after being hired in June 2013 by Ranadive. Malone was hired before D'Alessandro in what was considered an unusual order of events. D'Alessandro said his de- cision to come to Sacra- mento was an endorsement of Malone but now he will get the opportunity to hire his own coach. The Kings went 28-54 in Malone's first season and missed the playoffs for an eighth straight year. This season got off to a better start with the team win- ning nine of its first 14 games. But the Kings have fallen into a tailspin af- ter star center DeMar- cus Cousins was sidelined with viral meningitis. Sac- ramento has lost seven of nine games without Cous- ins and is tied for 10th in the Western Conference with an 11-13 record. "I would be lying if I said I didn't feel that it was par- tially my fault," Cousins said. "In reality it isn't, but me personally I feel like it is. Me being out, us losing some games. I feel like I played a part in it." One of Malone's biggest successes was the way he got the most out of Cous- ins, an ultra-talented big man whose emotions often got the best of him before Malone's arrival last year. Cousins said he was sur- prised when he found out the news late Sunday night on Twitter. "Who wasn't? I think this surprised everybody," he said. "Usually with sit- uations like this, you kind of know it's about to hap- pen. This just happened." D'Alessandro will not commit to Corbin lasting the rest of the season, say- ing only that he will have the full support of the orga- nization. Corbin went 112- 146 in three-plus seasons as coach of the Utah Jazz and was not offered a con- tract after last season. Corbin began to imple- ment change at his first practice Monday. "It's difficult for players to change mid-stride," Corbin said. "You have to not con- fuse them and get them thinking. Where we have ideas about changes and things, we have to gradually get those changes so they're not thinking too much out there on the floor."
