Whittenberg Country School was open Thursday, the day of the big storm and several students participated in a community service proj- ect that the storm provided an opportunity for. The project connected to thestudents'studyofgeology in science. Significant ero- sion along the sides of Wil- lard Road led to deposition of dirt, gravel and rock on the road and on the bridge at Reeds Creek. The students have been studying sedimentary for- mations this week, which in- cluded making, cooking and examining a sedimentary layer cake. The storm pro- vided a further illustration. The students worked to- gether to clear the most ob- structed lane of the road, and then continued on to a neighbor's house, where they cleared leaves off of her porch and ate cookies. Countryschoolstudentsweatherstorm COURTESY Students are clearing off the bridge over Reeds Creek on Willard Road. This past week has been a big one for the Nunez family. Their son, Justin, signed his con- tract to play football in college. In the fall, Nunez will be a Colorado State Ram. That, in and of it- self, is a reason to cele- brate and I know that the RBUHS family and the community as a whole supports the Nunez fam- ily. My focus is on Leka, Justin's mom because I know exactly how she feels and exactly what she went through to see her son to holding a pen in his hand, while she stands off to the side. As a mother who raised a Division 1 colle- giate athlete, I know first- hand the extra mile that goes into every choice, ev- ery decision and every ac- tivity on the path to that success. I know what it took for her to see the po- tential in Justin, know deep down that he had what it took and to guide a child with hormones and peer pressure and underdeveloped maturity to postpone immediate gratification for the big- ger picture. Leka, I know that along this path you were not only your son's big- gest fan, you were his counselor, his morality, his mentor, his life-coach, his go-between, his sec- retary, his public rela- tions manager, his curric- ulum strategist, his tutor, his whatever-it-took-to- get-him-seen-ager. You deserve this moment as much as he does. It has been a pleasure to spend the 2014 sea- son with you as a foot- ball mom and I know the stress and worries that accompany the Senior year and that the stress isn't entirely over. Every decision your son makes between now and the mo- ment he steps foot into the Colorado State dorm matters, one slip of the grades, one point off on the SAT, one stupid social mistake can affect his fu- ture. The mommager sea- son isn't quite over. In the fall, you will see that all of the weight of responsibility shifts to Justin and his university; where you used to be in- timately involved in de- cision making, you will be kept out of the loop unless your son brings you in. You may have to bite your tongue more than once, but you will have a voice when your son comes to you for ad- vice and you can help him stay true to his mor- als and beliefs. Remem- ber, athletes are their business. It is a business, you must keep you child grounded in who he is and be willing to say no. It is a business. As a mom who had been to every event my daughter ever partici- pated in, it will kill you the first time you can't be at a game. I know, I cried. It's all right to cry. It will kill you the first three times they are sick or in- jured and you aren't there to take care of them. It will get easier and Justin will mature because of it. Leka, you matter be- cause you are a special sort of mom; a mom who bought into the dream and moved Heaven and Earth to make it happen. Justin's skills could have only taken him so far. You and your family and the community are what brought it all together and you led the way. Con- gratulations. FAYDRARECTOR Youmatter, Leka Nunez The constituents of the Corning Healthcare District reelected Charles Rouse to serve on the district board. Yvonne Boles and Janice Ir- vin were also elected. Rouse has been on the board since 2009 near the completion of the Meuser Memorial Health Center project. Rouse and his wife Angelica have farmed a small olive orchard in Corn- ing for more than 36 years. "He is a vital part of our board", said President Patri- cia Rasmussen. Boles has served on the board since March 2014 when she was appointed to fill the vacancy of previous director Guadalupe Green. Boles has been involved in the community for many years, best known for her work with seniors as assis- tant to doctors Wold and Bagwell. She served on the Corning Commission for seven years, on the Corn- ing Chamber of Commerce board for six years and was a city hometown revital- ization committee mem- ber when the trees were planted. In past years she was involved in the organiz- ing of the Olive Festival, the May Madness car show and Corning Hometown Christ- mas activities. Irvin will be recognized by many seniors in the Corn- ing area as she was formerly a phlebotomist for Quest Di- agnostics. She now works for Feather River Hospital in the Corning Health Clinic at 155 Solano St., where she serves as the phlebotomist and the manager of the lab in that building. She is not new to the politics of Corning as she served on the Corning Chamber in previous years. "We are very pleased that these volunteers have seen fit to work on the Corning Healthcare District board," said Rasmussen.
