ByKyleHightower TheAssociatedPress LAKE BUENA VISTA, FLA. Mar- cus Mariota put up nearly flaw- less numbers this season in lead- ing Oregon to a spot in the first College Football Playoff. At the College Football Awards Show on Thursday night, he went a perfect 3 for 3. Mariota opened the night by winning the Davey O'Brien Na- tional Quarterback Award, and closed it by claiming the Max- well Award, given to the college player of the year. In a separate announcement he also was se- lected the Walter Camp National Player of the Year. "It's surreal. It's surreal. It re- ally all is," Mariota said. "Grow- ing up as a kid you always kind of see these award shows. To say that I'm a part of really this fra- ternity ... it's really just a bless- ing." Mariota said this week he has never been completely comfort- able with the spotlight brought on by winning awards. Thurs- day there was no way he could escape it. Already considered the front- runner to win the Heisman Tro- phy on Saturday night, he now hopes to become the first player to win the Maxwell Award and Heisman in the same season since Auburn quarterback Cam Newton in 2010. Some recent history is on Mar- iota's side. Four straight winners of the Davey O'Brien award have gone on to win the Heisman. The Associated Press ALAMEDA The Oakland Raid- ers packed an equipment van, piled players into three buses and left their facilities in the rearview mirror on Thursday. No, the team hasn't found a new home to replace their dilapidated digs at the Oak- land Coliseum. But with a heavy rain storm pelting the Bay Area, the Raiders had no choice but to relocate their practice to an indoor facility in a converted airplane hangar a short drive away. "It wasn't really that big," interim Oakland coach Tony Sparano said. "We had seen the forecast. We went out last week in the rain but with the way this thing was coming in, with the wind and the rain, there wasn't much we were go- ing to get accomplished there so we planned ahead." The Raiders made the change Thursday morning in response to what was expected to be the most powerful storm to hit the area in five years. Steady rains fell most of the morning and afternoon, par- tially submerging a portion of Oakland's practice fields. Even the field covered by Field Turf — which was installed in 2002 — was unusable. PREP ROUNDUP Corning wrestling team beats Red Bluff Cardinals drop one major decision in 67-4 thrashing By Ronald Blum The Associated Press SAN DIEGO Baseball's winter meetings ended with an old-style spurt of swaps, with All-Stars switching teams at a rapid pace and executives scrambling to fill roster voids. Alfredo Simon, Dee Gordon, Yoenis Cespedes, Miguel Montero, Jeff Samardzija, Brandon Moss, Dan Haren and Howie Kendrick were among the All-Stars dealt by the time teams headed home Thursday, and Matt Kemp and Jimmy Rollins were on the verge of switching clubs. The Los Angeles and Chi- cago teams were the epicenter of change, along with the Miami Marlins. Twelve trades involving 44 players were made over the four days, according to Major League Baseball, up from five swaps last year and three in 2012. There hadn't been this many trades at a winter meetings since 2006. "People are motivated," Seat- tle general manager Jack Zduri- encik said. With major league revenues in the $9 billion range, increased sharing and changes to rules for the amateur draft, more clubs have money to spend and large- market teams are more con- strained.
