Red Bluff swept Oroville 25-12, 25-13, 25-17, Tuesday night, taking control of each game down the stretch. 6:30 p.m. Red Bluff coach Kim Wheeler said her Lady Spartans were some- what sluggish, playing down to the pace of the game. The Lady Spartans first turned on their jets during the middle of Game 1 when a Maggie Hansen ace gave them a 13-9 lead. Kalynne Schoelen and April All- wardt followed with kills and it was 15-9 and Oroville was taking a time out. Red Bluff kept the pressure on as Schoelen and Allwardt connected again. Allwardt then fired in an ace to make it 20-10 Red Bluff. A few points later Riley Kittle got in the act with one of her team- high seven kills on the night. Kittle and Jessica Macdonald teamed up for a block to push the score to 24-12 and then Oroville made an error to give the Lady Spar- tans Game 1. Red Bluff opened up Game 2 with a 9-2 run to start. Oroville tried to climb back in, but a Schoelen ace started another Lady Spartans' run and made it 14-7. A pair of Kittle spikes, an All- wardt kill and a few Oroville mis- takes later and it was 18-7 Red Bluff. Shelby McKinstry added two kills late as Red Bluff won Game 2 25-13. Oroville hung around a bit longer during Game 3, but once again Red Bluff found a way to break it open. Kaitlann Weber, who had 20 assists on the night, fired home an ace to make it 16-10 Red Bluff. The Lady Spartans built their lead to 18-11, before Oroville gave it one last go. The Lady Tigers closed the gap to 19-17, before a smart play at the net by Allwardt halted the bleeding for Red Bluff. Schoelen then fired in serve after serve and Oroville kept making mis- takes all the way to the end in a 25- 17 Red Bluff win. Kittle had a pair of blocks and seven kills to go with her seven kills. Allwardt finished with five kills and three blocks. Schoelen also had five kills. 0 Red Bluf 3f 1B Wednesday September 28, 2011 Spartans sweep Oroville Daily News photo by Rich Greene Red Bluff's April Allwardt pokes a shot past an Oroville player for a point,Tuesday night. Megan McColpin had seven digs and nine service points, including a pair of aces. Despite the sweep, Wheeler said there was still room for improve- ment. She stressed the Lady Spar- tans need to be more consistent to compete with the upper echelon of teams in the Northern Section. "When we're passing we're pret- ty good and when we're not we're going to get killed," she said. The Lady Spartans will continue to work on that consistency, Thurs- day night, when they host Las Plumas at 7 p.m. Welts ready to help lead Warriors OAKLAND (AP) — Rick Welts figured he would begin work on a book project and line up some speaking engage- ments to keep him busy in the coming months. The longtime NBA executive had put his pro- fessional life on hold — ever so briefly, as it turned out — to take care of the personal side. Openly gay in the sports world, he is in the process of relocating from Phoenix to Northern Cali- fornia to be with his part- ner, Todd Gage. Welts' work plans changed in a hurry when the Golden State Warriors came calling. They hap- pened to have an open executive position on the business side, and Welts had all the credentials to fill it. Less than three weeks after leaving his job as a top businessman with the Suns, Welts has taken on a similar role with the rebuilding Warriors. He signed a multiyear deal to become the team's presi- dent and chief operating officer, reporting to new See WELTS, page 2B Rick Welts is introduced at a press conference,Tuesday.
