The heaviest pockets of snow will tend to focus from western and central upstate New York to northern Pennsylvania. Blustery, chilly conditions are in store from the Great Lakes to the Atlantic coast. Farther west, a broad zone of mild air will expand from the Four Corners and Plains to much of the Mississippi Val- ley. Clouds and spotty rain will keep parts of Texas and the southern Plains cool. Rotis- serie chicken, bacon, dog toys, more than a dozen volunteers and even a psy- chic have not been enough to find Murphy, an elu- sive golden retriever whose owner's five-month search for the beloved animal has captivated one mountain- ous area of Vermont. Neighbors have pulled to- gether to try to find Mur- phy since he was spooked by a car accident and ran off June 29, going door-to- door with posters, looking for tracks and setting out food and traps. He's been spotted numer- ous times, in backyards and on trail cameras in Water- bury Center, about 8 miles from the crash. But any time someone gets close, the 3-year-old cagey canine darts off. "I definitely think he's still in the fight-or-flight mode because he seems to run from everybody," said his owner, 24-year-old Kirstin Campbell, of Mor- risville. Campbell had Murphy with her when her vehi- cle went off the road and hit a tree in Stowe. She let the dog out after the crash and he ran away, trauma- tized. He was seen around the resort town in the sum- mer but ended up venturing south to Waterbury Center, apparently along the one main road between the towns. The search has gotten the attention of local media and members of a popular online community forum where Campbell's grand- father Ed Hamel, 63, has posted weekly since Mur- phy disappeared. "We did the old, you know, put the clothing out, put the towels out, food out, treats out, walk around and walk around, leave our scent everywhere and that didn't do any good," said Hamel, who describes Murphy as "the best dog in the world." At one point they enlisted a Massachusetts-based pet psychic who claims to be able to communicate with animals. After Murphy was spot- ted in August, one woman drove about 30 miles from Burlington every night to keep a look out for him in Waterbury Center. Hamel and Campbell urged people not to chase the skittish pooch, just to report where they see him. "I miss him like crazy," she said. The Associated Press HONOLULU A new study estimates nearly 270,000 tons of plastic is floating in the world's oceans. That's enough to fill more than 38,500 garbage trucks. The plastic is broken up into more than 5 trillion pieces, said the study pub- lished Wednesday in the sci- entific journal PLOS ONE. The paper is the latest in a nascent field where sci- entists are trying to bet- ter understand how much of the synthetic material is entering the oceans and how it's affecting fish, sea- birds and the larger marine ecosystem. The study's lead author is Markus Eriksen of the 5 Gyres Institute, an organi- zation that aims to reduce plastic in the oceans. To gather data, research- ers dragged a fine mesh net at the sea surface to gather small pieces. Observers on boats counted larger items. They used computer mod- els to calculate estimates for tracts of ocean not sur- veyed. The study only measured plastic floating at the sur- face. Plastic on the ocean floor wasn't included. Bits greater than about 8 inches accounted for three- quarters of the plastic that the research estimated is in the ocean. 5 TRILLION PIECES Study: 270,000 tons of plastic in oceans 235So.MainSt.,RedBluff 527-1657 FurnitureDepot MON.-FRI.9:00-6:00 SAT. 9:00-5:00 • SUN. 11:00-5:00 all Recliners SPECIALS SPECIALS Continue Beautyrest mattress sets $ 200 OFF $ 100 OFF Regular Haircut $ 2 00 off KWIK KUTS FamilyHairSalon 1064SouthMainSt.,RedBluff•529-3540 ANY RETAIL PRODUCT 20 % off withanychemicalserviceof $50 or more Notgoodwithotheroffers Expires 12/31/14 With coupon Reg. $13.95 NeedaDoctor?
