SOCCER UEFA Champions League: 11:30a.m., FS1. Ontheair By Carl Steward BayAreaNewsGroup OAKLAND It'shardtofind anyone who has a neg- ative word to say about the Golden State Warriors these days. Even longtime critic Charles Barkley is al- most on board. Almost. Following the Warriors' impressive home victory over the New Orleans Pel- icans last week that was telecast by TNT, Barkley said on the network's In- side The NBA postgame show that Golden State is now an elite team and that guards Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson comprise the best backcourt in the league. But Barkley then added, "I think they're a big guy away. My philosophy has always been live by the jumper, die by the jumper. I said the same thing about Oklahoma City with (Russell) Westbrook and (Kevin) Durant. They're never going to win until they get a big guy down low to get some easy baskets. I have the same issues with the Warriors." There may not be many impact big men in tonight's marquee matchup at Ora- cle Arena pitting the 18-2 Warriors, who have won a franchise-record 13 in a row, against the 16-4 Hous- ton Rockets, who have won seven out of eight. Andrew Bogut (back) is listed as questionable and David Lee (hamstring strain) has been declared out for the 17th consecutive game. Meanwhile, Rock- ets center Dwight How- ard (back, knee strain) is still listed as doubtful de- spite going through prac- tice Tuesday. Houston coach Kevin McHale said on Monday that Howard "won't be back anytime soon." Hence, it's possible this significant meeting will feature a center matchup of backups Festus Ezeli against Tarik Black. That's not likely to change Bark- ley's view on the balance of power in the Western Con- ference. "I have no idea who's going to win the Western Conference right now," he said on the TNT show. "Obviously, Golden State's in the conversation. The Spurs, Dallas, Portland, the Clippers. But I like the bigger teams, because I like dunks more than I like jumpers, plain and simple." NBA Barkley down on Warriors TNT critic says Golden State still needs 'a big guy' In other words, it's quite possible that Bowman, who was voted first-team All-Pro the past three sea- sons, won't play in a game this season. "Vic's told me, no mat- ter what's said he wants to make sure I'm 100 percent because this is my career," Bowman said. "It's not the last game of my career. I'm glad that everyone cares about me, not just this season or this game. They want to make sure I'm 100 percent and able to live out my career." Fellow inside linebacker Patrick Willis last month opted for season-ending surgery on a big toe that has bothered him for years. He cited his desire to pro- tect his long-term outlook as a driving force for mak- ing the decision. Bowman said he hasn't thought about shutting it down for the rest of this season. He said he is fo- cused upon returning as soon as he can but only if he's certain that he's ready to play at the level he is ac- customed to playing. Not being able to play this year also has helped him gain an even greater appreciation for his job. "Anyone that dedicates as much time as I have to this game will miss it," Bowman said. "It's really like losing a family mem- ber. It's that much part of me. I wake up, I think about football. I breathe it." Bowman also gets ques- tions from his 5-year-old son about when he is go- ing to get back on the field. "The little boy says, 'Daddy, when are you go- ing to play?' and he's un- derstanding the game," Bowman said. "That's re- ally hitting home with me because I really want him to see how hard daddy works." • The 49ers placed tight end Vance McDonald on season-ending injured re- serve to make room for Bowman on the active ros- ter. McDonald has been bothered by a back injury. McDonald said Tuesday that the injury "gradually" worsened over the past couple weeks. He missed the past three games. He declined to detail the exact nature of his in- jury or say whether it re- quires surgery. He noted that he has received en- couraging reports that his injury shouldn't be a long- term issue. McDonald, a 2013 sec- ond-round draft pick, had only two receptions for 30 yards this season. McDon- ald joins fellow tight end Derek Carrier on injured reserve. • Cornerback Chris Cul- liver said an MRI exam showed that he did not suffer serious damage to his surgically repaired left knee Sunday in a game against the Raiders. "I took a big hit," Cul- liver said of a second-quar- ter collision with a team- mate. "I'm taking it day by day and just sore." Culliver missed all of last season upon tearing the anterior cruciate lig- ament in the same knee during training camp. He started every game this season at right cornerback, except for an Oct. 19 loss at Denver. 49ers FROM PAGE 1 Barreto, both are seen as a year or two away. Some scouts question if Semien is going to be a anything more than an average defender, but as Oakland general manager Billy Beane said Monday before the deal was final- ized "we are willing to live with some growing pains" at short. The A's believe Semien will be an adequate defender, at a minimum. Described by a rival club's general manager as "primarily an offensive player," Semien was on the White Sox's opening day roster in 2014, played in 64 games and hit .234 in 65 games with a .300 on-base percentage and six homers. The loss of Samardzija takes away an All-Star right-hander who likely would have been the club's No. 1 starter. Third-year right-hander Sonny Gray and lefty Scott Kazmir re- main solid at the top of the rotation, and the A's have high hopes for lefty Drew Pomeranz, who pitched well in limited starting duty in 2014. Bassitt could slot in as either the fourth or fifth man in the starting rota- tion. He was only a 16th- round draft pick out of Akron in 2011, but the 6-foot-5 25-year-old has come on quickly in the last year or so, throwing with a good downward plane, which the A's like, mid- 90s velocity and he's been an Arizona Fall League All-Star in both 2013 and 2014. The A's caught his act on Sept. 10 in Chicago, where, ironically, he was matched up with Samardzija. Bas- sitt allowed one run in six innings and stood to take the loss with Samardzija throwing seven shutout in- nings, but the A's bullpen in the person of Luke Gre- gerson gave up two runs in the eighth as then-third baseman Josh Donaldson described it "then the cir- cus came to town." Still Bassitt was impres- sive. And his history in climbing out of obscurity as an unheralded draft pick is solid. He throws a fastball (91-94 mph, top- ping out at 96), a slider (80- 85 mph with a good break) and a changeup (69-75 mph with impressive drop). Athletics FROM PAGE 1 run by former Red Sox ex- ecutives Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer. "There are other clubs he's a little more attached to," Evans said. For the defending World Series champions, the fo- cus remains the same, even if the biggest target is no longer an option. "Starting pitching re- mains a priority," Evans said, although he would not go into specifics when asked about right-handers Max Scherzer and James Shields, the other two big names on the market, say- ing only that "anybody is a consideration." The Giants have one spot left in their rotation and have stepped up talks with players on their wish list. That list has Jake Peavy and Ryan Vogelsong on it, but other names are con- sidered a higher priority at the moment. With Fran- cisco Liriano also off the market, right-handers Er- vin Santana and Brandon McCarthy are expected to be sought after in the com- ing days as clubs recover from the Lester sweep- stakes. The Giants also con- tinue to look for upgrades at third base, left field and in the bullpen. They have been linked to Chase Head- ley, the top third baseman on the market, but club of- ficials downplayed that possibility Tuesday. Head- ley is said to be zeroing in on a final choice. Earlier Tuesday, the Gi- ants were connected to Justin Upton and Chris Johnson of the Atlanta Braves, but while they have had talks with the Braves, that deal is not considered a good fit. Johnson, a third baseman, had a .653 OPS last season and has $17.5 million left on his deal. In searching for an- other outfielder, the Giants are primarily targeting right-handed hitters who can platoon with Gregor Blanco. That would all but eliminate Michael Morse, who should get offers as an everyday player, possibly as a DH. The Giants have con- tinued to stay in touch with Morse and his representa- tives, though.
