At the cost of top-end starting pitcher Jeff Samardzija and mi- nor league reliever Michael Ynoa, the A's added four players, two of whom, infielder Marcus Semien and pitcher Chris Bassitt, could have an immediate impact on the big league club. The two other players acquired, catcher Josh Phegley and first base- man Rangel Ravelo, figure to be Tri- ple-A players to start 2015. Semien, from St. Mary's High and Cal, will have the shortstop job to lose in spring training. He's mostly been a third baseman with a sec- ondary role at second base for the White Sox, but in the minor leagues two-thirds of his playing time has been at short. Shortstop has been perhaps the prime concern for the A's since the 2014 season ended. The A's lost two-year starter Jed Lowrie to free agency and while two of the club's top five prospects are shortstops, Daniel Robertson and Franklin BASEBALL A's deal Samardzija, Ynoa to White Sox Oakland gets four players from Chicago in trade, two of whom may be ready for big league club BENMARGOT—THEASSOCIATEDPRESSFILE The Oakland Athletics traded an All-Star for the third time in less than two weeks, sending right-hander Jeff Samardzija to the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday. MEYER — BAY AREA NEWS GROUP The San Francisco 49ers' NaVorro Bowman (le ) on Tuesday was activated to the team's 53-man roster although coaches said Bowman may need more practice. By Steve Corkran Bay Area News Group SANTA CLARA Linebacker NaVorro Bowman on Tuesday reached a sig- nificant milestone in his recovery from a major knee injury when he was activated to the San Francisco 49ers 53-man roster. However, it remains unclear whether Bowman has progressed enough to play in a game before this season ends. He won't find that out until he tests out his knee in practice. "I'm going to get out there when I feel 100 percent; let's be clear on that," Bowman said after an on-field workout Tuesday. "But throughout this rehab process, I've been doing everything to get this far. Now it's time for some football activity, some quick-reaction, things like that." Bowman has not practiced since he was removed from the physically unable to perform list three weeks ago. Tuesday was the deadline for the 49ers to place him on the active ros- ter or season-ending injured reserve. It's expected that he'll practice in a limited capacity with his teammates soon, perhaps as early as today. The 49ers have only three regular- season games remaining and they are in the playoff hunt. However, it's also conceivable that the 49ers get eliminated from playoff contention this Sunday when they play the Se- attle Seahawks. Bowman is attempting a come- back from the torn anterior cruci- ate and medial collateral ligaments in his left knee that he suffered dur- ing a fourth-quarter play against the Seahawks in the NFC Championship Game on Jan. 19. Coincidentally, Bowman's first game back on the active roster comes against the Seahawks at the very sta- dium where he suffered his injury. Even so, it's unlikely that he will play Sunday. Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio has said several times that Bowman would need a couple of weeks or so of practice once he reached this point before he would be ready to play in a game. PREP ROUNDUP Cardinals beat Chico in soccer in 2nd half By Alex Pavlovic Bay Area NewsGroup SAN DIEGO Jon Lester has taken his time while choosing his next team, but the end came quickly for the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday night. "We did not receive a rose," as- sistant general manager Bobby Evans said. Lester, the star left-hander who has held up the entire pitch- ing market, called the Giants de- cision makers at around 5:30 to inform them that he would not be coming to San Francisco. He is ex- pected to choose between the Bos- ton Red Sox and Chicago Cubs, a path that became clear to the Giants earlier in the day as talks reached the finish line. In talking with Lester's repre- sentatives, Evans got the impres- sion that the 30-year-old was feel- ing the pull from two clubs closer to his heart. Lester was drafted by the Red Sox and spent his whole career in Boston before a midsea- son trade to the A's.
