ByRalphD.Russo APCollegeFootballWriter The 12-member CollegeFoot- ball Playoff selection committee will gather Saturday in Texas to watch the final weekend of the season play out and then rank the top 25 teams in the country. The top four will compete for the national championship in the sport's first ever playoff. How difficult the commit- tee's job will be depends on the outcome of about a half dozen games to be played today and Saturday. "At that point, we will have had a season long body of work to evaluate, in addition to know- ing who the conference champi- ons are," committee chairman Jeff Long said. The top four heading into the weekend are in order: Alabama, Oregon, TCU and Florida State. If they all take care of business, there is a good chance that will be the top four on Sunday, too. Probably. Maybe? But what happens if things don't go as expected? Let's dive into the possibilities. What happens if .... Missouri beats Alabama? The unthinkable — at least for many down South. There is a very real possibility the South- eastern Conference would be left out of the playoff. Missouri is ranked 16th in the latest playoff rankings. That's a long way to go to get in the four-team field. The committee clearly is not loving Missouri's ugly losses (at home COLLEGE FOOTBALL Playoffscenarios: Who'sinwithupsets? PREP ROUNDUP RB Lady Spartans team beats Shasta 1-0 Red Bluff boys earn draw to start season on road By Jeff Larson Paradise Post CHICO Eastern Athletic League power Chico High kicked off its wrestling season Wednesday night in its new gym against Corning of the Northern Athletic League. There was little resistance for anyone not in a Panther singlet, as the six-time defending EAL champions won nine of 14 weight classes with five pins to beat Corning, 48-18 at Lincoln Field House on the Chico High campus. "I'm happy with (the perfor- mance)," Chico coach Keith Rol- lins said. "At this time of the year I just want to see improvements. This is a building process so we expect some of our kids to be a lit- tle out of shape." Two grapplers who looked to be in mid-season form were two of Chico's leaders this year: Mor- gan Sauseda and John Leal, both of whom are ranked top 10 in the California Wrestler preseason state rankings in their respective weight classes, jumped out on their Corning opponents early in the dual. Sauseda, ranked sixth in the state's 116-pound class, grabbed a 10-2 first-period lead on Alex Dejesus, before putting away the Corning senior via a 14-4 major decision. Leal, a three- time Northern Section champion, who's ranked third in the state's 160-pound class, didn't give up a point in his first bout of the year, en route to a 15-0 techni- cal fall over Tony Carrillo in the 170-pound match.
