This recipe for classic Reuben sand- wiches is from Thirty Meals in 30 Minutes. 12 ounces thinly sliced deli Corned Beef 2 tablespoons but- ter, softened 8 slices rye or pum- pernickel bread 8 slices reduced fat or regular Swiss cheese 1 cups sauer- kraut, well drained cup reduced fat or regular Thousand Island dressing Instructions 1. Lightly spread butter on one side of each bread slice 2. Heat large non- stick skillet over me- dium heat until hot. Place 2 bread slices, butter side down, in skillet. Top each bread slice with 2 slices cheese, 1 ta- blespoon dressing, 3 ounces Corned Beef and of the sauer- kraut. Top with 2 bread slices butter side up. 3. Cook sand- wiches 4 to 6 min- utes or until bread is golden brown and cheese is melted, turning once. Repeat with remaining sand- wiches. Serve with additional Thousand Island dressing, if de- sired. CATTLEWOMEN'SCORNER Re ci pe f or c la ss ic Reuben sandwiches It's time to kick off the season with a Sacramento River Discovery Center Bird Walk, starting at 8 a.m. Saturday. The weather reports are that Saturday will be a cool 44 in the morning, partly cloudy to partly sunny and warming up to 62 in the afternoon. The walk will start and finish at the center, 1000 Sale Lane in Red Bluff and is free and open to all. Dress warmly and grab your binoculars and bird books and join for the De- cember Bird Walk on Sat- urday. DISCOVERY CENTER Bird walk set for early on Saturday The following Red Bluff Emblem Club events are scheduled during Decem- ber. TheEmblemClubDinner at Elks Lodge is set for 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3. The annual holiday bake sale will be held at the Elks Lodge, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 7. The Emblem Club busi- nessmeetingandfooddrive is set at the Elks Lodge, 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 9. The Red Bluff commu- nity blood drive will be 2-6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 17 at the Veterans Memorial building, Oak and Jackson streets, sponsored by Em- blem club. The club's din- ner is set for 5:30 p.m. at the Elks Lodge. EMBLEM CLUB Month of December activities planned Boy Scout Troop 5 will be holding a paper drive at 9 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, or Saturday, Dec. 13, 2014 in case of rain. Leave your newspapers on the curb on that morn- ing for pick up. Anyone living outside the city can take their pa- pers to Specialized Fiber on South Avenue just west of the railroad tracks. BOY SCOUTS Paper drive set for Saturday Several veterans orga- nizations will hold a me- morial remembrance at 9 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 7 in front of the Tehama County Courthouse on Washing- ton Street. A color guard and an honor guard will perform all functions, including raising the flag then lower- ing it to half-mast and a ri- fle firing sequence followed by the playing of "Taps." A brief reading will con- sist of the numbers killed in action, including per- sonnel from the U.S. Navy, Army, Army Air Corps, Marine Corps and civil- ians. Also to be read will be the numbers of ships and aircraft destroyed. The public and veter- ans from all eras, espe- cially those of WW II, are invited to help remember this day of infamy. Arrests ShaleenJessicaHill:44, of Red Bluff was arrested Monday on Interstate 5 north of South Avenue on an outstanding felony charge of possession of a con- trolled substance. Bail was $50,000. Cheyanne Faye Brown: 29, of Shasta Lake City was ar- rested Monday in the 16400 block of Blue Oak Road on outstanding charges of felony possession of a con- trolled substance, failure to appear, misdemeanor driving under a suspended license and misdemeanor failure to appear. Bail was $106,000. Shots fired Shasta College, Tehama County: A caller reported hearing four shots fired in the area on Monday. The au- thorities contacted Depart- ment of Fish and Wildlife officials who were using the Red Bluff Police Depart- ment's firing range. Suspicious Solano Street, Corning: A caller reported Monday that a man had been locked in the bathroom of a business for about two hours and requested that he be es- corted out. The man agreed to leave. Chestnut Street, Corning: A caller reported Monday that her neighbor came to her door and asked for a cigarette. The neighbor became upset when the caller did not give her one and threw an object at the caller's residence. The 5000block of Glonka Lane: A caller reported Monday that "Indian rocks" were stolen Saturday in the area. The caller reported that three mortars valued at about $150were taken. Police logs It was a bold thief whose work resulted in the dis- appearance of a spare disc wheel and tire, with a blue rim, from the car of L. D. Sarvis, local manager for the California Automo- bile Association, Wednes- day evening. While he was attending a picture show, the machine was stand- ing in front of his office on Main street where the elec- tric lights were bright and people were passing along, with a meeting in progress at Masonic Temple, Sarvis voiced surprise over the in- cident, especially in view of the frequent efforts he makes to aid other motor- ists to recover lost cars and part of cars. — Dec. 3, 1924 90 YEARS AGO...
