Wednesday, September 21, 2011 – Daily News 1B 2011 Tehama District Fair The Daily News' daily guide to the best of Tehama County on display Youth to compete for county titles Fair by the numbers Adams Aquilar Hubble James A. Mandolfo M. Mandolfo By JULIE ZEEB DN Staff Writer Several local youth are looking to gain a county title on Thursday when eight girls compete for 2011 Miss Tehama Coun- ty and two boys go head to head for the Tehama County Ambassador title. The contest begins at 7 p.m. Thursday on the mid- way stage at the Tehama District Fair. By JULIE ZEEB DN Staff Writer The Tehama District Fair opens Thursday and despite the bad economy of the last few years and the "lean and mean" approach for 2011 Fair CEO Mark Eidman is still hopeful the community will come out. "I hope everyone comes out to see what Tehama County has to offer from the State Fair booth to the Tehama Marketplace to all of the pies and jams that our local people have brought to see," Eidman said. "If the weather is good, I hope for greater crowds than last year." The poor economy resulted in the fair offering free admission on Thursday in 2010, but the 2011 fair will see a slight increase. "The economy has definitely affected our fair," Eidman said. "That's why we had a free Thursday. We went from 1,400 people when paid to 5,000 last year." Admission Thursday will be a dollar, which goes just to pay the gate help, he said. The 2010 Tehama District Fair was also a year in which no big name entertainers were brought in and yet attendance was still at about 20,000 people, he said. The fair brought in about $260,500 in gross with expenses being roughly $230,500, not including staff time, Eidman said. Gates open at 2 p.m. Thursday and the first event will be swine judging, which starts at 3 p.m. in the Don Smith Pavilion. Buildings will start opening about 4 p.m. and the See FAIR, page 2B Only about 35 percent of the score will be taken from what the audience sees Thursday evening with things like the con- testants' attitude and par- ticipation in practice being just one of the other facts considered in choosing the winner, said contest coor- dinator Sonja Akers. Three panels of 15 judges, all of whom are from out of county, will be at the event Thursday to help level the playing field. "There's a lot we put into the competition because we want it to be fair," Akers said.
