Wednesday, September 21, 2011 – Daily News 3C Commerce business Tehama County Busi- ness of the Month for Sep- tember, determined by a nomination and selection process sponsored by the Red Bluff-Tehama County Chamber of Commerce and the Daily News, is the New Asian Restaurant, 628 Main St. in Red Bluff. The individual who sub- mitted the nomination for News Asian Restaurant is a regular customer who praised the quality of the food and customer service. "We appreciate that Angela remembers our names and our favorite foods," the person wrote. "I bring out-of-town guests to the New Asian Restaurant to experience the hospitali- ty." To nominate your favorite local business for Business of the Month con- sideration, visit the chamber of Commerce at River Park, call 527-6220 or visit red- bluffchamber.com. Today, economic devel- opment and community prosperity cannot be based on the long held traditional strategy of attracting large, new companies to the area. That attraction model has left many communi- ties with no Eco- nomic Develop- ment Corporation arm at all. Today's work is to create opportunity through innova- tion, education, capital investments, and strong relationships. With one in five Tehama County residents living below the poverty level and unemployment floating around 16 percent, we can't wait for Washington D.C. or Sacramento to get it right. Gone are the days of look- ing for the stable govern- ment job or large employers to fulfill the commercially insured, stable jobs that we hope will settle in our coun- ty — the world market now dictates entrepreneurialism as the key that could unlock the door to economic pros- perity-but we must pass through a few deadbolts first. In the fall of 2009, with the Lake Red Bluff decision in place, the county of Tehama hired Audrey Tay- lor of Chabin Concepts to develop a comprehensive economic development strategy. Taylor's work, Action Roadmap for Eco- nomic Growth, was formal- ly adopted by the Board of Supervisors and Tehama EDC and then presented at the Seeds of Opportunity event in early 2010. Branding as a tool toward economic prosperity Kristin Behrens findings identified several issues: a lack of vision for the county, unclear leader- ship and direction; deficient pride and collaboration; a need to better showcase our best assets to stimulate eco- nomic vitality. It was this study and Chabin Con- cepts who recom- mended DDI and Roger Brooks as they wit- nessed the work that was happening in nearby Angels Camp. About the same time, the Job Training Center and the Red Bluff/Tehama County Chamber of Commerce invited 75 young profes- sionals, ranging from 20s to early 40s, to meet and answer two questions: 1) why do you choose to live here? and 2) if money was no object, what would you do or put in place to improve the quality of life in Tehama County? The con- versation confirmed that the demographic loves this area, they want to raise their families here, but it also reaffirmed the study find- ings. Bottom line: the young professionals would like more to do, to see, to experience. They also want more reasons to spend their (shrinking) discretionary income in the county, espe- cially after work and on the weekends. This group would soon become known as NEXT Tehama. In the spring of 2010, with Taylor's study still fresh, Roger Brooks of Des- tination Development was invited to present a keynote around helping communi- ties assess and better play to C & C PROPERTIES their natural strengths. The presentation resonated with the audience. Six months later, Brooks returned to secret shop the county and present a workshop on his findings. Again, the room was full and as much as locals hated to admit it, Brooks brought up some simple but sobering facts and created a few "I hadn't thought of that before" moments. Most people left feeling a little more pride for the county than when they arrived. They saw the county, not just their partic- ular part of it, and its assets as potential opportunities. Manton mountain wineries? Mt. Lassen as a national wonder? Motorcycles and sports car enthusiasts actu- ally enjoying Highway 36? And he asked the ques- tion we loved to think about: what can you do here that someone can't do clos- er to home? And so the branding project, one aspect of moving forward, began. The difficulty with com- mitting to a branding project is clearly sharing what that means. Branding a place is very different than branding a product, and in the case of Tehama County, four areas were identified: Red Bluff, Corning, Manton and an umbrella brand for the county. A brand is not a logo or a slogan – those are just very small aspects of a destina- tion brand. To brand the area is to create an experi- ence and deliver on that experience again and again. It begins with identifying what we would like to be known for and then creating experiences that we're 741 Main Street, Suite #2 Red Bluff, CA 96080 1-800-287-2187 (530) 527-2187 An Independently owned and operated Member of Coldwell Banker Residential Affiliates. As the community begins to own the experi- ence, we market those expe- riences, creating reasons for others to stay for a few more hours, a few more days. It takes private investment and champions to bring the brand experience to fruition. That can take many years or just a few, depending on the team behind the brand. Will Roger Brooks and DDI change the communi- ty? No. Only we can do that, and we have more than enough talent and drive to get that done. Can Roger Brooks and DDI help us set a direction? Yes. He already has. We needed to be clear on where we need improve- ment. We needed to have key conversations and make new contacts. We needed to connect the dots between towns, internal and external perception, history and politics. We needed to see our community through the eyes of the visitor and invite businesses and investors to the table. We have a lot of work to do, a lot of initiatives to keep ablaze, but the time is now. The gears have set the wheels in motion. Interested? Learn more at the Chamber Installation Dinner, Thursday Sept. 29 at the Elks Lodge. Pano Robles is the new owner/manager for the Corning restaurant. In 1997 Marco Ramos began his own enterprise with a little restaurant in Yreka, California called Casa Ramos. The Casa Ramos name stands for the "House of Ramos" where all are welcome to enjoy the warm hospitality of Marco Ramos and his fam- ily. Many of Marco's customers strongly suggested that he expand his operation. Soon after, he opened his second restaurant in beautiful Mt. Shasta and now there are 11 restaurants in Northern California. You'll find many of Marco's family members involved in various operations of the business pro- viding a warm, friendly, family atmosphere. All of his restaurants serve up the best in deli- cious and authentic Mexican cuisine. Many dishes are from the Ramos family collection. The menu is varied to suit everyone's taste. In addition to the tra- ditional fare, we have heart-healthy dishes, vegetar- ian dishes, and a fun children's menu. You'll find wonderful food, warm hospitality, and a festive atmosphere at every one of the Casa Ramos loca- tions. • Jeff Tollison, the ROP Instructor at Corning Union Highs School invites community members as well as school employees to come be a guest speak- er in his CUHS classroom. The course called, My Life and Work Preparation is focusing on two main concepts this year: Community and Contribution. He is inviting community members to come and share about their own lives as it relates to Corning (or Corning High). His goal is to have one guest per week (on Wednesdays). Driving this project is the opportunity it will give his students to interact with positive community members. It will also give them a venue in which to practice many of the social skills needed to be a contributing member of our community: listening skills, conversation skills, etc. It is his hope that his students will feel a connection with positive com- munity members as a result of having them in their class. You would speak around these items: Personal Biography (include hobbies/pastimes), your favorite memories of Corning, ways you see your- self making contributions to Corning, what you hope for the future of Corning or Corning High, etc. You would then field a few questions from the stu- dents. In total this would cover approx. 30-40 minutes per period. Jeff would be happy if you were able to commit to two class periods. This would be a Wednesday (any you choose) from 9:30-11:30 a.m. If you are able to attend, please contact Jeff at (530) 209-9250 or email him at jtolliso@tehamaed.org. with the Wednesday date that suits you, as well as the name of your favorite coffee drink.. ——— This column is prepared and submitted by the Corning Chamber of Commerce.
