N orth Carolina author and musician Clyde Edgerton will present "Wake Up Your Funny Bone: Readings, Stories and Music" for the Friends of the Cumberland County Public Library & Information Center's 10th Annual Author Event and Library Endowment Trust Benefit on Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m. at the Cape Fear Regional Theatre, 1209 Hay St. General admission tickets are $15 and may be purchased at City Center Gallery, 112 Hay St.; or that evening at the door. Tickets for the program plus the benefit reception are $85 each or $150 a pair. The reception begins at 6 p.m. in the Glass Block Room at the theater and includes hors d'oeuvres, beverages, a signed copy of the author's book, "The Bible Salesman," as well as an opportunity to meet the author. Edgerton was raised in the community of Bethesda near Durham and is a professor of creative writing at the University of North Carolina- Wilmington. His nine novels include "Walking Across Egypt," "Killer Diller" and "Lunch at the Piccadilly." O n Saturday, Nov. 7, downtown Fayetteville will pay tribute to our veterans with the annual Veterans Day Parade. The parade starts at 11 a.m. at Hay Street and Bragg Boulevard and will end at the county Courthouse. Hosted by the Cumberland County Veterans Council, and co-sponsored by the City of Fayetteville and Cumberland County, the celebration will continue at 1 p.m. with a free "Concert in the Park" at Festival Park. Cumberland County veterans service organizations will provide free hot dogs and water. Cumberland County has more than 45,000 veterans, and this is a small way we can say thank you. Please plan to bring your family downtown for a day of patriotism and fun. If you are a Cumberland County veteran, the county's Veterans Services Office can assist you with benefits and offer information on services available to you. The office is on the ground floor of the Department of Social Services, 1225 Ramsey St. Call 677-2970. All of the services are free. Hours are 8:30 a.m. until noon and 1 to 3 p.m. on Monday through Thursday. Telephone hours are Monday - Friday 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. The Veterans Service Office is hosting a Town Hall Meeting on VA benefits at 1 p.m. Nov. 21 at the Headquarters Library, 300 Maiden Lane. After a short program, the floor will be open to questions. Veterans Services Here to Help By SALLY SHUTT Cumberland County Communications Manager Author to Wake up Your Funny Bone Applications for Master Gardeners T he 2010 Master Gardener class is right around the corner. Applications are being accepted until Friday, Nov. 6. A volunteer initiative offered through N.C. Cooperative Extension Service, the Master Gardener program reaches out to the local gardening community through presentations to local groups, the Plant Hotline, and work at the Cape Fear Botanical Garden. Master Gardener training starts Jan. 13 and runs through April 21. They meet every Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. During the course, each participant will be given a sound foundation of horticulture and its practices, which enables participants to then go out and help the public. After the classroom instruction is over, participants have to volunteer 40 hours the first year to become a Certified Master Gardener. This is done through volunteering at various events throughout the year. There is a cost for the program, which covers all materials for the class. H1N1 Vaccine Update T he Cumberland County Public Health Department, 227 Fountainhead Lane, recommends that individuals call the Immunization Clinic at 433-3657 to check on the availability of the H1N1 and Seasonal Flu vaccines and on the hours for vaccination clinics. Hours may change daily because of the demand for the vaccine and the arrival of shipments. For more information, call the Immunization Clinic at 433-3657.
