NOVEMBER 4-10, 2009 UCW 17 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM Picnic in the Grove Encourages Family Literacy by HEATHER YBARRA Parents are often encouraged to read to their children. This encouragement starts when the children are newborns and continues throughout their school years. The benefi ts of reading to young children are proven to be great. Children learn that reading can be more than just homework, it is fun and enjoyable. The expansive world of books is often fi rst experienced in the local libraries. Fort Bragg's J.L. Throckmorton Library opens its doors and the world of reading to children daily. In addition to the wide selection of books offered at Throckmorton Library, a variety of activities and events bring the written word to life for children. Each Wednesday, parents bring their young children out for Story Time which includes a story reading and craft time. School age children participate in the Summer Reading Program which encourages youth to continue to read when not in school by providing rewards throughout the summer. On Saturday, Nov. 14, Throckmorton Library will host its annual Picnic in the Grove. Kids will enjoy various games and activities while learning to appreciate books through the art of storytelling. Picnic in the Grove is free and will last from noon to 3 p.m. Limited refreshments and prizes will round out the fun. Grab the kids and enjoy a day outside with books and see the joy reading can bring to their faces.
