It sounded like a fun thing to do. Well, the kids aren't even out of elementary school yet, but the opportunity came up and they jumped on it. And lucky for the community that they did. Their establishment, Fred Chason's Grandsons has become a local favorite and winner of Up & Coming Weekly's Best of Fayetteville in the Best Southern Style Restaurant category for the past three years. Many locals re- member Fred Chason's place in Lumber Bridge from back in the '80s and '90s and the Wargas are certain that is what drew in many of their first cus- tomers. "We knew the name would draw them in," said Todd. "And we wanted to make sure we could do what we needed to do the bring them back," Sheryl added. Well, they do come back, in droves, and from far and wide. There is the couple for Florida who stop by twice a year, and a gentleman who drives down from Greensboro a couple times a week just to get some of their good home cooking. The secret? "We use a lot of the old family recipes," said Todd. "The mac-n-cheese is the same, the fried chicken, the banana split cake... we cook the vegetables like he (my grandfather) did. Basically, it is pretty much the same food he served." The atmosphere is the same too. "We've pretty much followed in his footsteps," said Sheryl. "Red and white table cloths and the mason jars, a lot of people like that." The few changes that they have made have gone over quite well. This past June they start- ed serving breakfast and it has been a big hit. "We had a lot of people asking about breakfast," said Todd. It only added a few more hours to our work week and it has really taken off. It has been good for us." Fred Chason's Grandsons is open Wednesday - Sunday. They serve breakfast from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. Wednesday thru Saturday and from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Sunday. Lunch is from 11 a.m. to 4 pm. Wednesday thru Saturday and dinner is served from 4-9 p.m. On Sundays lunch and dinner are served from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Whether you are looking for sweet tea just like gramma used to make, redeye gravy, meatloaf, Bar-B-Que, or a piece of banana split cake, the Warga's want you to know "If they want some good southern cookin' this is where they need to come. We've got big variety, good prices, we take pride in what we do. We maintain a real high health rating. It is a family atmo- sphere." They are located right off I-95, exit 41 at 5339 Marracco Dr. For more info give them a call at 860-4899.
