conferences. Recently she delivered a talk,
"Retiring into a New Career," to the Los
Angeles retired school district administrators.
Joan has served in leadership positions in
many professional organizations, including
the Ventura County Community Foundation,
local hospice board, president of the Ventura
School Psychologist Association, president
of the California Association for Counselor
Education and Supervision, and president
of the Epsilon Phi Chapter of Delta Kappa
Gamma. For eight years, she served as
member of the Ventura County Mental
Health Board, serving as chair for one year.
Joan encourages women in the chapter to
"get good grades and take part in offices in
the chapter and on campus. Take part in a
lot of activities; those are the things that will
put you in good shape when you graduate."
Living in Southern California, Joan has
found it difficult to remain as involved with
Chi Omega activities, but she has kept in
touch with Eleanor. Joan and her husband,
Norman, who is a Stanford graduate,
attend game days in the Bay area for their
respective schools. When there, she enjoys
visiting the chapter house and appreciates
the good care that the actives and alumnae
take of the house.
Between writing, counseling, and volunteer-
ing, Joan doesn't have much time for addi-
tional hobbies and she wouldn't have it any
other way. "I feel very lucky," she said. You
can contact Joan at blacher@callutheran.edu.
