Around 7 a.m. Thursday depu- ties responded to the casino for the report of an attempted strong arm robbery, according to a depart- ment press release issued Monday. They met with a 65-year-old woman, who said a woman had tried to forcefully pull her purse from her shoulder in an attempt to steal it. The suspect was de- scribed as Caucasian. The victim, along with the as- sistance of her husband who she was with at the time, was able to fight off the suspect. The suspect fled in a silver two-door sedan, being driven by a Caucasian man. They fled in an unknown direction. Neither the victim nor her husband was in- jured during the altercation. According to sheriff's logs the victim stabbed the suspect with a key, but it was unknown whether she was injured. "The Tehama County Sheriff's Department is investigating leads that may shed light on the iden- tify of the female and male sus- pects," the press release said. The decision was a win for the defendant, Quentin Ray Bealer, who turned around to face the gallery after the announcement was made to give a thumbs up. Later when leaving the court- house, a smiling Bealer spoke to the sheriff's deputies escorting him. "Sac(ramento), baby! Where I wanted to go — all union," he said. Bealer and his defense attorney Shon Northam had been granted their change of venue request in early November. Bealer is charged with kill- ing Nichols in February 2013. She was last seen near Red Bluff Union High School and her body was discovered two days later in a wooded area just south of the campus. Garavaenta's decision Mon- day came down to Sacramento County or Yuba County, the lat- ter argued for by Deputy District Attorney Randy Alvey. It was the first time Bealer had been in court since he was es- corted away during a Nov. 17 hear- ing, which he interrupted with a vulgarity-laced tirade. Garaventa opened Monday's hearing by saying the court would not tolerate another outburst and asked Bealer if he understood. Bealer, sporting a freshly shaved head since the last court appearance, responded that he did and apologized for his previ- ous behavior. Media coverage of the out- burst was one of the key points Northam used to argue against moving the trial to Yuba County. Northam called jury trial re- location expert Dr. Bryan Edel- man to the stand and played the television coverage of the out- burst. Edelman said the coverage was sensationalized because it showed the outburst of a large man with long hair and could influence pos- sible jurors in Yuba who had seen the coverage. "It comes across as scary," Edel- man said. Following the wagon were 48 other entries, an increase from a year ago, according to Dave Gowen, CEO of the Red Bluff-Tehama County Cham- ber of Commerce, which co- sponsored the parade with the Downtown Red Bluff Business Association. A good-sized crowd lined the sidewalks along Walnut and Main streets and Kenny Brewer from the Palamino Room acted as emcee. Santa Claus brought up the rear of the parade, riding in a fire engine that delivered him to the State Theatre, where he met with children.
