Pi Beta Phi ENTRE NOUS Alumnae Challenged to Raise $75,000 to Complete Kitchen Renovation During Winter Break T hanks to lead gifts by the Fertitta and Tutor families, Cal Gamma has raised $150,000 of the $225,000 needed for the renovation of our 41-year-old kitchen. "We are challenging our alumnae to help us raise the final $75,000 so that we can complete our kitchen over winter break," said Susan Brownfield Beall '85, House Corporation president. "We were thrilled that the Fertitta and Tutor families have donated funds for two-thirds of the kitchen renovation, including demolition, the purchase of major appliances, and electrical work. This project would not be possible without their generosity." Alumnae donations will pay for items such as flooring, lighting, painting, cabinetry, a buffet area and shelving, among other items. Our kitchen is heavily used each day— please help with this very important project! This summer, we worked on a complete overhaul of the electrical design of the kitchen and added new appliances. "Where we love is home—home that our feet may leave, but not our hearts." – Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. H ello, Cal Gammas! Happy fall! Leaves are changing, summer vacations are a memory, and our children are going back to school. This is my favorite time of the year as we transition to a new season. Change is good, right? My son, Sterling, is a freshman at the University of Washington and moved into his fraternity house as pledges are expected to live there their first year. Let's just say that his house is nothing like our beautiful Cal Gamma! As I walked through his fraternity, I noticed nine sofas carefully arranged for optimal viewing of the 72-inch flat screen television, beautiful but sticky hardwood floors, empty pizza boxes, and the impromptu modern art of beer bottles stacked in the hallway next to the empty trashcan. Oh to be in college again! I had never been more thankful for Pi Phi and our beautiful house at 667 W. 28th Street. After surveying his tiny room that he'll share with his roommate, we quickly went to Bed Bath and Beyond. My goal was to get him the farthest away from his mattress while sleeping. After encasing the mattress, buying a Tempurpedic foam pad, two mattress pads, sheets, down comforter, duvet and pillows, he looked at me and said, "Mom, I feel like the boy in the plastic bubble." I realized that this was my way of keeping him safe and probably the last "mom thing" I was going to get to do for him for a long time. Gulp! My UCLA Bruin husband Robert often asks me why I serve on House Corporation. I sometimes ask myself the same question, but I realize that through the years, Pi Phi has given me much more than I A Beautiful Place to Call Home Pi Phi the Caretaker of Young Actives Pi Phi donors may now make contributions online!
