ByJosephShufelberger jshufelberger@chicoer.com @JShufelberger on Twitter HAMILTON CITY Coach Erin Johnson said it's simple cause and effect when it comes to the Hamilton High volleyball team playing in front of its home fans. "The louder they get, I think," Johnson said, "the tougher we play." It got real loud inside the Hamilton gym on Tuesday night as the Braves swept Los Molinos 25-14, 25-9, 25-15 in the Northern Section Division V quarterfinals. Raegan Avrit had seven kills and four blocks, Kendra Gor- don made 17 assists and six kills, and Mariana Rios had 13 digs while adding four kills by being kept in the rotation for the duration instead of serving as a defensive specialist. The third-seeded Braves (23- 11) received even better news shortly after their match fin- ished — No. 7 Colusa beat sec- ond-seeded Quincy, 21-25, 25- 23, 25-23, 25-15 — and that at- tracted one final outburst from the fans who remained in the gym. That means Hamilton will host the RedHawks at 6 p.m. Thursday in the semifinal with the winner advancing to the section final at 1 p.m. Satur- day at Red Bluff High. By Cam Inman Bay Area News Group SANTACLARA Ahmad Brooks insisted Wednesday he did not quit on the San Francisco 49ers while sitting out the fi- nal three quarters of Sunday's win over the New York Giants, a benching he attributed to a sideline exchange with defen- sive line coach Jim Tomsula. Coach Jim Harbaugh said Brooks' actions were not tanta- mount to insubordination and that the 49ers still had trust in the outside linebacker who's started every game since 2011. However, Brooks confirmed that he was fined by the team, and although he wouldn't give the specific amount, it's believed to be about $10,000 rather than a game check of $50,294. "It was an emotional reac- tion during the game. I re- acted out of my character," Brooks said. "I did not quit on the team. I did not take myself out of the game. "But words that were said by me, obviously, couldn't be taken back, so they decided to not just put me back in for the remainder of the game." By Janie McCauley The Associated Press OAKLAND Billy Butler came so close to winning it all with Kan- sas City that it stings to be leav- ing his only professional team af- ter such a special run, and with some unfinished business. Then the Oakland Athletics came calling when his old club did not, and Butler is someone who prides himself in loyalty — in this case to A's general man- ager Billy Beane's persistence and interest in striking a quick deal. The versatile Butler finalized a $30 million, three-year contract with the A's on Wednesday. He re- ceives a $5 million signing bonus payable by Dec. 31, a $5 million salary next year and $10 million in each of the final two seasons. "We gave them a chance," But- ler said of the Royals. "It didn't work out. It's unfortunate. I en- joyed every day of the last 10 years, 10 years is a long time, just in life. I enjoyed every minute of it. It dampens it a little bit for me that we got to the top of where we're at and now I'm gone. I'm glad I got to see it through this year. ... It hurts a little bit that I'm not going to get to see the rest of that go through. I'm on to a dif- ferent chapter, that's the way you have to look at it." BASEBALL Butler, A's finalize $30 million, 3-year deal Oakland signs free agent DH for added power ED ZURGA — THE ASSOCIATED PRESS FILEL Billy Butler and the Oakland Athletics have agreed to a $30 million, three-year contract. The Associated Press SACRAMENTO — Sacramento Kings general manager Pete D'Alessandro took a calculated risk when he acquired veteran forward Rudy Gay from the To- ronto Raptors in a seven-player trade last December. That risk paid off Wednesday when Gay signed a three-year, $40 million extension to stay in Sacra- mento through the 2016-17 season. "When you're looking at some- where you can be for an ex- tended amount of years, you look at where you are now and where you could be in the future," Gay said. "I think this team could be really good in the future." The Kings view Gay as a sec- ond cornerstone to their franchise alongside center DeMarcus Cous- ins, who is in the first year of a four-year, $62 million contract extension he signed last summer. Gay is excelling early, averag- ing 21.8 points, 3.6 assists and 6.5 rebounds per game. Signing Gay to an extension now eliminates a potential distraction as the sea- son progresses. "What we have going on here is something different and I think everyone has sensed that from the beginning of the year," D'Alessandro said.
