6 The Katydid organizations on campus. In these positions I gained confidence to speak at meetings and mingle and meet new people. What is the biggest lesson you learned as NAA president? Margaret: After serving on the National Alumni Association Executive Committee as one of 24 national vice presidents, I served as president-elect, president, and past president. I loved meeting alumni from all over the country in over 100 local alumni associations. I learned that there are thousands of alumni and friends who are part of the Alabama family. Melanie: The position is a commitment for three years. Only one year did I actually serve as president. It was a magical year to represent The University of Alabama throughout the country. Chapters in other parts of the U.S. enjoy the excitement of learning about the recent news of the university and meeting together with friends. What advice would you offer to undergraduates today? Margaret: As a minister's wife I knew we would move to different places, and I learned that I would have an immediate connection with other Alabama alumni and KD sisters wherever we lived. After moving to new church communities, I would immediately join the local Alabama Alumni Chapter and KD Alumnae Chapter. I made so many new friends and connections. The Alabama and KD family network was always helpful in finding jobs, doctors, dentists, bankers and others who became a part of my life while living in that geographical area. I am so very grateful for all the opportunities of learning and leading through my collegiate years and my KD alumnae experiences. Thank you, Kappa Delta, for investing time, energy, interest and money that helped me use skills and abilities for a lifetime. Melanie: Take advantage of all opportunities. It is so important to step out of the box and make new friends and participate in new organizations. These contacts may serve you well later in life. Also, keep your value system intact. Many times in new surroundings, new friends can influence us to do and say things we would never have done in our homes. Let the voices of moms, dads, and teachers guide you. Q&A with Past National Alumni Association Presidents (Continued from page 5) Kappa Delta Looks Forward to New Chapter House Chapter Welcomes 121 New Members K appa Delta at UA has had an exciting fall semester. We celebrated a successful recruitment on Bid Day, welcoming 121 great women from around the country. Our Chapter was able to celebrate achieving a GPA of 3.31, above the all-women GPA of 3.20. These are just a few of the many accomplishments we have made this semester and we look forward to many more to come. Successful Recruitment Held in Temporary Housing Our Chapter is currently in temporary housing, called a swing space, while the new Chapter House is being built. During recruitment this year, we went over the top with decorations and made our swing space feel like home. Being in an older house presented obstacles for the recruitment chairmen and the recruitment team, but our awesome alumnae dedicated countless hours of work to help make it our best recruitment yet. Each day of recruitment was able to run smoothly due to the detailed planning done by party chairmen and alumnae. The sisters of Zeta Chapter want to thank these alumnae for their dedication and support that helped make our recruitment so successful! New Members Make Freshman Forum Our recruitment chairmen, Ann Carter Sasser '12 and Elizabeth Coleman '12, were excited to see all of our hard work pay off on Bid Day when our awesome new class ran to our lawn to join the rest of our Chapter. We celebrated being "Still on First" by taking our Bid Day pictures underneath the oak trees on our original lot in front of the wire fencing around the construction site. Our new pledge class proved to be even more exceptional by having Madison Maclean '14, Lee Bonner '14, Katie Marie McEntyre '14, Everette Dawkins '14, and Sarah Sanford '14 make Freshman Forum, a unique leadership development program for first-year students. Visit the Chapter House for Homecoming We are celebrating Homecoming on November 22 and our Homecoming chairman, Harrison Newman '12, has great plans in store. The week before Homecoming our members will be working hard on yard decorations, as well as participating in fun events like flag football, bowling, and basketball. On November 22 we will serve lunch at the Chapter House and encourage all alumnae to come see our yard decorations and celebrate Homecoming with us. The time for lunch will be announced at a later date. We look forward to seeing you in the near future!
