28 www.DesertMessenger.com November 19, 2014 Willow Bark is a powerful natural remedy that has been used for centuries in the treatment of pain and infl ammation. It can be taken in capsule or tincture form, or may come in the form of a cream, lotion, or gel that can be applied directly to the skin. Willow Bark was noted in literature as early 400 BCE, when patients were instructed to chew on the bark of a willow tree in order to help reduce fevers and relieve infl ammation in the body. It remains in use today throughout the world as a means of relieving the symptoms associ- ated with infl ammatory conditions such as back pain, especially low back pain; bursitis, tendinitis, os- teoarthritis, and headaches. Other conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis, other types of arthritis, and joint pain may also benefi t from the addition of Willow Bark to the treatment regimen. Where to Find Willow Bark Willow Bark capsules, tinctures, and containing creams can be found online, and in most health food stores and health and herbal shops throughout the world. Wil- low Bark in its natural form can be more diffi cult to fi nd, although if White Willows grow without pes- ticides near to where you live, you may be able to obtain bark from these trees. Why You Might Want to Take Willow Bark The decision to take Willow Bark is an important one. Although there are many different supple- ments that you can take that may work more quickly than Willow Bark, the long-lasting impact of this natural ingredient, and the help it provides in your healing process, make this ingredient one of the most important in any healing regimen for infl ammatory conditions. When is Willow Bark Most Ef- fective? The effectiveness of Willow Bark and its ability to positively im- pact you is directly related to your condition. While taking Willow Bark orally as a capsule and as a tincture is incredibly effective, it is important to note that this may not be the most effective method for your condition. If the infl ammation causing your back pain, osteoar- thritis, rheumatoid arthritis, fever, joint pain, headaches, and other infl ammatory conditions resides in your muscles, tendons, or even in your skin, the most effective way to take your Willow Bark is on your skin as a cream or a gel. This is due to the fact that Willow Bark, taken internally, will travel through- out your body and heal multiple sources of infl ammation, which can reduce the impact to the injury you wish to heal. By applying Willow bark at the source of your pain and infl ammation, you are allowing your body to use its full power to heal you both immediately and in the long term. It is important to note that applying a cream or gel containing Willow Bark is a safer way to heal an infl ammation, given that other capsules or other oral methods may cause secondary ef- fects in other parts of the body such as the liver. What Makes Willow Bark Work? Willow Bark contains an element known as salicin, which is similar in many properties to aspirin. This is why many homeopaths, herbal- ists, and also doctors believe Willow Bark is so effective at relieving the symptoms of pain and suffering that come with internal and external infl ammation in the body. Aspirin has been favored in more standard Western medicines because it has a quick-acting impact on infl am- mation and can quickly reduce pain. However, while Willow Bark is slower to relieve pain and suffer- ing than aspirin, its powerful and positive effects are known to last much longer than aspirin. Addition- ally, as Willow Bark is not typically produced alongside other pharma- ceuticals, it is safer to take more of this product in multiple forms than it is to do the same with aspirin- containing products. Willow Bark also has other important properties, including fl avonoids and polyphe- nols, which give it immune-boost- ing, fever-reducing, antiseptic, and antioxidant properties. What Do You Need to Know Before Taking Willow Bark? Although Willow Bark is considered to be one of the most effective and long-lasting options for the relief of pain and infl ammation, its property similarity to aspirin will make it dangerous for anyone who is sensi- tive to products such as aspirin. If you suffer from serious pain and in- fl ammation that could be caused by a more critical injury, it is impor- tant to see a healthcare provider.
