2A Daily News – Friday, September 9, 2011 Community people&events Military - Higgins Appraisals offered at Jubilee Special to the DN They're back to answer "Is it trash or a treasure?" For a number of years the antique appraisals at the Tehama County Muse- um's 30th annual Jubilee was one of the best loved features. Photo courtesy of Kerry Link Justin Higgins The family of Justin Higgins flew to Columbus, Ga., to celebrate Justin's Turning Blue and graduation from Army basic training at Fort Benning. His brother Kyle, sister Trisha, mother Kerry and step-father Don attended the ceremony. Higgins is currently attending airborne school. He is a 2004 graduate of Red Bluff Union High School. This year that highlight is reappearing with Sam Kissee and a group of professionals coming from Chico to give county residents a feel for what their family heirlooms might be worth. The group has a limited sched- ule and will only be avail- able from 10:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10. The Jubilee itself is 8 a.m.to 4 p.m. The expertise found among these folks is quite impressive. Kathy Squyres evaluates antique jewelry, paintings, watch- es, and furniture . For larger pieces, it is asked to bring photos of the piece. Lee Laney assesses any items from the Arts and Crafts era along with cameras, photos, and prints. Barb Gore, besides assessing overall antiques, specializes in costume jewelry, and depression glass. Dave Campbell gauges the value of post cards, 78 records, opera memora- bilia and any memorabilia relating to Hollywood and the movies. Cal and Tanya Vincent focus on Asian, Native American, and Ethnographic art. Bar- bara Schletzbaum has an affinity for dolls, toys, books, and children's items in general. Sam Courtesy Photo Residents from all across the area made a special effort to get their family treasures evaluated by Sam Kissee and his group of profes- sional antique appraisers at the 2009 Tehama County Museum Jubilee. Kissee himself deals in 19th century glass table- ware, art glass, art pottery and 19th century Staffordshire ware. Long a special treat at the Jubilee has been the opportunity to have firearms appraised. This will be the last year this feature is conducted by a very special member and longtime museum sup- porter, Richard "Dick" Chamberlain. Dick, who has served as a board member as well as presi- dent of TCM, is a found- ing member of the histo- ry consortium, an avid gun collector and presi- dent of the local antique gun club, is leaving the area. So, the invitation is out to bring your firearms to the Jubilee for an authority to work his appraisal magic. As a gesture of good will, the appraisers donate their time, expertise and $5 per item charge to help support the Museum. The days other delights include, but are not limit- ed to: a hearty pancake breakfast; a new lineup of live, local entertainment; an old fashioned country store; fiber arts demos; a homemade pie auction; an "American Classic Mem- ory Cars" display; the Nancy Serr Memorial Art Exhibit; 36 Lady Museum Prune Muffettés; raffle prize drawings, and over 35 crafter and artisan booths. Admission and parking for the Jubilee, which will be at the Tehama County Museum at 275 "C" Street, is free. For more information call 384-2595 or visit www.tehama- countymuseum.org. Women Bring Fine Sets Of Deer Horns In a remarkable drive, for women, over the rough roads that mark the trip through portions of the Sierra Nevada range of mountains, Mrs. Artino Mitchell and Mrs. Marian Mitchell, wives of well known sheepmen of Red Bluff, have arrived home with two equally remark- able horns from deer shot by their husbands in Warner Valley, Plumas County, about seventy five miles northeast or here. — September 9, 1921 Courtesy photos Dual proclamations were issued for Tehama County Museum Day. Left: Robert Mitchell, mayor of Tehama, presents a proclamation to Chris Bauer, president of the Tehama County Museum stating that the City Council had declared Sept. 10 as "Tehama County Museum Day." As the museum prepares for its 30th annual Jubilee it has always played a positive role in the com- munity and has had a long and constructive relationship with the city. Mitchell encouraged residents to join the celebration and participate in Jubilee activities. In the same spirit, Ron Warner, Fifth District supervisor, introduced a sister proclamation to the County Board of Supervisors at the Aug. 23 meeting. It was signed by Board Chairman Gregg Avilla and Warn- er presented it to Pam Britting, TCM executive director. The proclamation identifies the Tehama County Museum as an important asset to the people of the County, cites its work in preserving and presenting the various elements of Tehama County history in an honest and balanced manner, and also urges everyone to help the Museum celebrate. The Jubilee, which is free, is 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Satirday at 275 C St. in Tehama.
