18 UCW NOVEMBER 12-18, 2014 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM In any new program, there's only one first class. Methodist University's new Doctor of Physical Therapy program will start its first class next fall, and enrolling in this ground- breaking cohort is a unique opportunity for physical therapy students. Methodist University's first doctoral program is staffed with new, enthusi- astic faculty, that is actively engaged in clinical practice in the areas of orthopedics, vestibular rehab, clinical elec- trophysiology and neurology. The first students will be role models who will set the tone for proceeding classes and influence how the program is run in the future. The students are also the first users of the new Health Sciences Building, which is under construction on campus. The new building will have the latest in equipment for motion analysis/biomechanics, and an up-to-date human performance lab. The first class, as well as those that follow, will have opportunities for interdisciplinary learning with other programs at Methodist, including Physician Assistant, Nursing, Athletic Training and Exercise Physiology. Though the university is small, it is this very closeness that will ensure students are more integrated with the campus community as they take their places in something bigger than themselves. Because the first class will have a huge impact on our future accreditation status, acceptance into the pro- gram doesn't just mean you made the cut, it means we believe that you can excel in the academic and clinical world. Some students think that it could be risky to take the first step with a new program, but I believe it will show confidence to future employers and be a stand-out feature on any resume. Our first students will also have a special feeling of gratification that will come from being part of something new and knowing their performance impacted its future. For local students who want to live and work in this area, Methodist's DPT program has already made connections with area practices, and students will be given many oppor- tunities to interact with the local com- munity through service and other activities.
