Snyder Honors Victims at 9/11 Memorial Service a STAFF REPORT Well known for their out- standing musical talent and the variety of worship and entertain- ment that they provide to the community, Snyder Memorial Baptist Church is set to impress the community yet again. On Sunday, Sept. 11, at their 9/11 Memorial Worship Service the Snyder Youth Choir, Sanctuary Choir and Snyder Orchestra will perform the Fayetteville premier of the commissioned anthem "I Have Overcome the World." This musical setting of scripture is intended to provide comfort and encouragement as the congregation reflects on the tragic events that took place on September 11, 2001. Composer Dan Goeller will be in town to conduct the anthem that was written in loving mem- ory of Billy, Kathy, Connor and Cameron Maxwell who died on November 2, 2009. The anthem, based on John 16:33 and four other scriptures, has spoken powerfully to the Snyder singers and family members as they have worked through their grief at the unexpected and tragic loss of the Maxwell family. For more than 10 years, the creative efforts of Dan Goeller have been uplifting music ministries, congregations and audiences across America. His numerous arrangements, compositions and orchestrations have been pub- lished by Word Music, Lifeway Music Group, Brentwood-Benson Music, Augsburg, Lillenas and others. In addition to his published works, Goeller has also worked on numerous recordings and several tours with artists in- cluding Amy Grant, Vince Gill, Michael W. Smith, CeCe Winans, Larnell Harris and Point of Grace. Goeller, his wife Heidi, and their two daughters live in Sioux Falls, S.D. The Snyder Orchestra has performed many of Goeller's arrangements over the years, and the memorial service will feature several of his most popular hymn settings under his direction. The commissioned anthem, "I Have Overcome the World" was met with overwhelming response when it was premiered at the National Cathedral this past July. It is scheduled to be- performed at several national festivals during 2011 and 2012. For more than 10 years, the creative efforts of Dan Goeller have been uplifting music ministries, congregations, and audiences across America. QDMA Builds Local Deer Herd While Promoting Safe and Ethical Hunting a STAFF REPORT As the blistering days of summer draw to a close, many in our commu- nity are looking forward to spending some quality time in the woods and in their surrounding fields. These solitary walks through the woods these days are more of a scouting mission, but in the weeks and months to come, these woodsmen will take up the hunt. On Fort Bragg, the Quality Deer Management Association ensures a bountiful hunt through its conserva- tion efforts. Quality-deer management (QDM) is a management philosophy/ practice that unites landowners, hunt- ers and managers in a common goal of producing biologically and socially balanced deer herds within exist- ing environmental, social and legal constraints. This approach typically involves the protection of young bucks (yearlings and some 2.5 year-olds) combined with an adequate harvest of One of the many activities of the Fort Bragg QDMA is its annual Youth Deer Hunt. female deer to maintain a healthy population in balance with existing habitat conditions and landowner desires. This level of deer management involves the production of quality deer (bucks, does, and fawns), quality habitat, quality hunting experiences, and, most importantly, quality hunters. A successful QDM program requires an increased knowledge of deer biology and active participation in management. This level of involvement extends the role of the hunter from mere consumer to manager. The pro- gression from education to understanding, and finally to respect, bestows an ethical obligation upon the hunter to practice sound deer management. Consequently, to an increasing number of landowners and hunters, QDM is a desirable alternative to traditional management which allows the harvest of any legal buck and few, if any, does. The Fort Bragg, the QDMA promotes: Safe and ethical hunting. Adherence to wildlife and trespass laws. Adequate harvests of adult does. Restraint in harvesting young bucks. Hunter involvement in education and management. Cooperation with wildlife biologists and enforcement officers. Education of hunters and non-hunters toward a better understand- ing of wildlife management. WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM Stewardship and appreciation of all wildlife. Annually, the organization sponsors a number of events designed to bring the importance of conservation and management to the forefront. On Sept. 9, the organization will host its annual Fall REACH Banquet. The ban- quet, which includes an auction and raffle, helps to raise funds to sponsor other projects held throughout the year. It is followed in November by the 5th Annual Youth Fall Deer Hunt, which is scheduled for Nov. 5. A big push of the organization is the Wounded Warriors to the Woods Program (W3P). The program, which began in 2008, is designed to bring wounded warriors who are unable to hunt due to physical constraints back into the woods. The Fort Bragg QDMA conducts educational seminars, hunting adventures and other outdoor activities in support of wounded war- riors. During these events, sponsored hunters are provided with a hunter education course, clothing and equipment for their hunts and mentors who accompany them into the field. The branch is also building disabled-accessi- ble hunting blinds on Fort Bragg. For more information on the QDMA or to find out how you can partici- pate, visit the website at www.qdmafortbragg.com.
