The Thunderbirds snapped a 29-game losing streak when they beat crosstown rivals Oroville. Then two weeks later ended their season with a win over visiting Red Bluff. Oroville presents speed in the backfield, but Corning has dominated this series since they started play again in 2008. Fri Nov. 4 vs Winters By RICH GREENE DN Sports Editor CORNING—For all the talent the Cardinals lost to graduation, the coaching staff was fearing it was the leadership intangible they would miss the most. After all, a year ago the juniors listened to everything the seniors told them and the formula was a success. Corning head coach John Studer said the staff's fear of lack of lead- ership eased away during training camp as he saw his current crop of seniors step forward and take over. It's a group led by a decorated line Studer describes as cerebral. "These guys are so into trying to be the best they can be," Studer said of his offensive line. "They're so cerebral it's allowed us to expand our play package." The group is led by returning All-Leaguers Roy Madrigal, Den- nis Womack and Erik Miranda. The three have good size and the ability to play physical to go along with their brains. Studer said as of Wednesday the Cardinals were still looking at a center by committee situation. Cody Long, a former halfback at the freshman and junior varsity level, has converted into a solid lineman and will see plenty of time. As for the Cardinals' skill play- ers, Studer said for him it all starts with their second year quarterback Ryan Holland. Studer said Holland is their most explosive back because of his flat out speed. "He makes things happen with the ball in his hand," he said. A year ago, Holland averaged 9.16 yards per carry as he rushed for 760 yards and nine touch- downs. He's not alone in the backfield as last year's injuries helped devel- op Corning's latest crop of backs for their Wing-T offense. Whited carried the ball 94 times last year for 593 yards and seven touchdowns, before getting hurt himself. John Lowe, who moved to receiver a season ago because of the depth in the backfield, is com- ing back to tailback this season. Lowe's ability to play multiple positions will be a positive for the Cardinals. Ezekiel Rodriguez starts the season on the injury list, but has the potential to be a game-breaker as well. A handful of guys will share the fullback duties, including junior Colton Conoly. Studer is also high on his receiv- ing core, led by returning starter Cole Barnes. The senior is a strong rout run- ner with soft hands. Colton Peterson, last year's junior varsity quarterback, will also line up at wide receiver. He is a physical player with the strength to get the ball in a crowd. Sophomore Chayce Maday will also factor. Cody Long and Cody Hoag will play tight end as well as defensive ends. Miranda and Madrigal anchor Corning's defensive line. "We're kind of expecting bigger and better things from them this year," Studer said. Austin Mallon will be the Cardi- nals' third interior lineman. Studer said linebacker is a strength for the Cardinals this sea- son. The group consists of Thomas Lowe, Womack and Whited. As explosive as Holland is on offense, his defensive skills at safe- ty often go overlooked. "He has such great spatial awareness," Studer said, pointing out he's also a strong tackler. Lowe will take one corner and Barnes and Maday will see action at defensive back as well. Corning struggled with its kick- ing game last year, but Mikey Sim- cox has been working throughout the summer to improve that part of the Cardinals' game. Rodriguez would handle the punting if healthy. In the meantime the job falls to Nathan Fultz. Whited and Lowe will return kicks for Corning. Studer said he likes his team headed into the season. "They have a lot of talent. We don't have a ton of depth at some positions, but they're a talented group." Outside of the roster the biggest change for Corning this year is their division. After spending two seasons in Division-I, Corning High's enroll- ment bumped the Cardinals back down to Division-II for the 2011 season. Studer said the program took the news with mixed reaction. On one hand the players were looking forward to a goal of win- ning the school's first D-I playoff game, but the drop should make higher aspirations more of a possi- bility. "It's great for our kids to just maybe have a little more of an opportunity to go after a section title," Studer said. Lassen and Sutter are consid- ered the early favorites in D-II and the school that took Corning's place in D-I, West Valley, is the Northern Athletic League favorite. Studer said in both cases it's fair to consider those schools the front runners. "Sutter and Lassen have been so successful for a long duration of time," he said. If Corning is to challenge for a league or even a section title, Stud- er said the key will be what hap- pens when injuries rack up. "The ability for a second team guy to step up and fill in and plug those holes. That's the difference between 5-win and 8-win teams," he said. For the past two seasons that happened for Corning with back- ups stepping up at crucial times. Both times the Cardinals ended up hosting a playoff game. If it happens again Corning won't just end up hosting a playoff game, but they should have a much easier opponent when they do. 2 Andre Pankowski WR/DB 3 Chayce Maday WR/DB 5 Cooper McCoy WR/DB 6 Cole Barnes 7 Trace Garrett 9 Colton Conoly 11 Ryan Holland WR/DB WR/DB RB/LB QB/DB 12 Colton Peterson WR/DB 17 Jeremy Ray 18 Ryan Valdez 22 Ezekiel Rodriguez RB/LB 23 John Lowe WR/DB 28 Thomas Profant RB/LB 30 Fernando Gonzalez RB/LB 32 Thomas Lowe 34 Nathan Fultz 44 Mikey Simcox 50 Noe Franco RB/LB RB/DB 36 Martin Solano WR/DB 38 J.D.
