Chester Russell Schmechel, 95 year old WW2 vet, passed away peacefully in Newberg, OR Sep 23, 2014. He was born May 2, 1919 in McClusky, ND and was a well known fi gure among the snowbirds in Quartzsite. A memorial was held Sep 26 at Newberg Adventist Church and included a Military guard by the Newberg VFW who also performed a fl ag service. He is survived by his wife Kathryn Schmechel (Newberg, OR), daugh- ters Joanne Piper (Quartzsite, AZ), Penny Ausmus (Newberg, OR), and Suzi Feierfeil (Newberg, OR), as well as many grandkids and great-grand- kids. He was born in Springfi eld, Ohio, and grew up in Oregon, attending Beaverton High School and college in Portland. Once an adult, he joined and eventually led the family business, Pacifi c Consolidated, while residing on his sail boat on the Columbia River. In 1988, Randie followed his boating passion and moved to the Big Island of Hawaii to start Sea Quest Rafting and Snorkeling Adventure. Capt. Randie was well known on the Kona Coast for his bear hugs, easy laugh and friendly way. He married Shawn in 1995 and they continued an active life together in Hawaii split between Sea Quest, traveling abroad, and RV-ing on the mainland. In 2010 they moved to Quartzsite, AZ to start a new chapter as owner/op- erators of The Scenic Road RV Park. Randie is preceded in death by parents Mollie and Laddie Farish and his brother Rick, and leaves behind his wife Shawn and step-mother JoAn Farish. A celebration of life and scattering of ashes at sea is being planned for a later date on the Kona Coast outside of Kealakekua Bay.
