Marcus Mariota and the Ducks, coming off a 45-16 win over Stan- ford, moved up one spot from fifth in the initial poll by the 12-mem- ber selection committee. They moved in ahead of Alabama, a third team from the West Divi- sion of the Southeastern Confer- ence that was also up one place to fifth. "It was very close, and I think it's the product of Oregon's other wins they have," Arkansas ath- letic director and selection com- mittee chairman Jeff Long said. "They have the Michigan State win, but they also, again, went on the road against UCLA and won, and a couple of wins that made their body of work, put them a step ahead of (Alabama) at this point." Mississippi dropped seven spots to 11th after its second con- secutive loss, 35-31 to Auburn. San Fran- cisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith has another game left on his nine-game suspension for vi- olations of the NFL's substance abuse and personal conduct poli- cies, and Von Miller can't wait to see his buddy back on the foot- ball field. Miller knows exactly what Smith is going through. Denver's pass-rushing line- backer missed the first six games last year while serving a drug sus- pension and then collected just five sacks in nine games before blowing out his right knee last December and missing the Su- per Bowl.
