The Duck call Page 4 Bob Hiatt '73 and undergraduates at the DUIF Leadership Institute. Undergraduates Hard At Work LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE Eight of our undergraduate members attended the DUIF Leadership Institute this summer where the chapter was recognized for signing the largest number of new members (39) of any DU chapter last school year. The chapter also had the second highest overall Chapter Excellence Plan (CEP) score. The CEP is a standardized planning and reporting tool developed by DUIF and is indicative of a chapters programming proficiency. Ryan Willy '17 was recognized as one of three Oak Circle Scholarship recipients for his fraternity involvement, Oak Circle participation, volunteer service, and GPA. RECRUITMENT Our summer recruitment resulted in the signing of 27 new associate members. The average ACT score of the members (26.9) was a full point higher than the University average. PARENT ORIENTATION The semi-annual new parent's orientation was held at Chamber Auditorium on August 23. Parent attendance for this event was outstanding. PLEDGE FATHER/PLEDGE SON COVENANT RITUAL On September 2, J.C. Emerson '62 planned and implemented a ceremony and dinner for the undergraduates celebrating the role of positive mentoring among our members. DAD'S WEEKEND This annual event was held on the weekend of October 11. Fathers and sons had an enjoyable experience despite the football team's loss to Georgia. INITIATION Initiation was held on Sunday, October 19, in the Benton-Bingham Ballroom of Memorial Union, where 27 new members were initiated. Parent and family member turnout was very strong. J.C. Emerson '62 and Joe Wilson '17 were the featured speakers. ALUMNI UPDATE CHAPTER ETERNAL Byron W. Ruffin '49, a true gentleman, entered Chapter Eternal on June 9 at the age of 91. He entered the U. S. Navy in 1942, and after four years in the Pacific during WWII, he continued his education at the University of Missouri studying electrical engineering. Byron served through the end of WWII in the Pacific and from his destroyer escort ship he witnessed General MacArthur sign the Declaration of Peace with the representative of Japan alongside his best friend of 70 years, Barry Bocchieri. Byron was a true patriot and loved this country. He was a cartographer and mathematician with the federal government for 23 years. He mapped the moon with mathematics for the NASA space program. Byron strived and succeeded in many areas from golf to ball room dancing with his loving wife, Helen. When he retired at the age of 55, he focused on enjoying the game of golf and the beauty of the outdoors. He carried his love for nature into his own yard and was a master of a pristine lawn. Jack P. Barger '54 entered Chapter Eternal on August 18, 2013. He was a resident of Bothell, Wash. Thomas E. Murphy '60 entered Chapter Eternal on May 20 at the age of 76 after battling Alzheimer's disease. He spent six years in the Army rising to the rank of Captain, and taught several business courses in Missouri, including Washington University in St. Louis. He is survived by his wife, Judy. Robert S. Brase '65 entered Chapter Eternal on December 9, 2013. ALUMNI NEWS Lt. Col. Johnnie Kump '67, CEO of Communication and Event Solutions, LLC, was installed as chairman of the Titusville area Chamber of Commerce in a public ceremony at Kennedy Space Center on January 24. "This is an important time for the Space Coast of Florida," he says. "I am excited to be leading one of the most vibrant economic drivers in the region. We represent so many of the small and medium size businesses that will help shape the future." Johnnie, a retired U.S. air force officer and former aerospace executive, started his consulting business on the space coast over four years ago offering a number of public relations, fundraising, and marketing tools. C&E Solutions has helped a gamut of clients including non-profits, religious organizations, political candidates, and government entities. Today he sits as the national director of the American Military Retiree's Association. He and his wife, Shirley, have two children and three grandsons. E-mail: jb.kump@gmail.com Mark W.
