FATALITY TwoTehamaCountymendieincrash By Rich Greene rgreene@redbluffdailynews.com @richgreenenews on Twitter REDDING Lassen Volcanic Na- tional Park and Whiskeytown National Recreational Area are considering doubling the ma- jority of their entrance rates starting in 2015. The parks are scheduled to hold a public meeting 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday to discuss the possible fee increases. The meeting will be held in the Community Room at the Redding Library, 1100 Parkview Ave. Under the proposal Lassen would raise its one- to seven- day vehicle fee from $10 to $25, its one- to seven-day individual fee from $5 per person to $12, the one- to seven-day motorcy- cle fee from $5 to $20 and an annual pass from $25 to $50. Whiskeytown would raise its $5 Daily Use Fee to $10, the Weekly Use Fee from $10 to $20 and an annual pass from $25 to $40. Entrance fees are not charged to those younger than 16 or holders of the America the Beautiful National Parks and Federal Recreation, Senior, Ac- cess or Military passes. Lassen has not changed its entrance fees since 1998 and Whiskeytown has not raised its since 1997. Other proposed visitor use fees for recreation use and camping have been developed through comparability studies with surrounding area services and are a part of the new fee schedules, a National Parks Ser- vice press release said. "We are committed to keep- ing the park affordable, but we also want to provide visitors with the best possible experi- ence," Whiskeytown's Park Su- perintendent Jim Milestone said in the press release. "The money from camping/entrance fees is used to improve visitor facilities, infrastructure, and visitor services." Recreation fee dollars at Las- sen Volcanic have made possi- ble the reopening of Butte Lake Campground, installation of park-wide wayside exhibits, de- velopment of the Lassen Cross- roads Information pavilions, in- stallation of campground bear- proof food lockers, restoration of the Lassen Peak Trail, re- pair of Pacific Crest Trail, horse corral improvements, rehabili- tation of the Devastated Area Accessible Interpretive Trail, installation of ADA-compli- ant audiovisual system at Loo- mis Museum, rehabilitation of three campground amphithe- aters, and museum and visitor center exhibits. Additional rev- enue raised by a fee increase would be used to improve and maintain Kings Creek Falls and Bumpass Hell trails, pro- vide children's interpretive ex- hibits in the visitor center, de- velop Crags Campground youth camp, rehabilitate Warner Val- ley Campground, and improve campground roadways and re- strooms. Recreation fee dollars at Whiskeytown National Recre- ation Area renovated all park primitive campgrounds and the Dry Creek group camp- sites, installed ADA accessible walkways and access ramps, installed campground bear- proof food lockers, maintained the kayak tour equipment and storage, installed fishing piers, created and maintained miles of trails, replaced the Oak Bot- tom wastewater treatment fa- cility, and replaced restroom facilities throughout the park. Thanks to fee revenue a proj- ect is currently underway to replace the Oak Bottom Beach restroom and changing facil- ity. Additional revenue raised by a fee increase will be used to improve and expand our 51 year old visitor center, reno- vate the beach stores and swim beaches, rehabilitate park pic- nic areas, renovate Oak Bot- tom Campground bathrooms, preserve historic structures, develop and produce park in- terpretive videos, renovate in- formational kiosks, provide improved signage, and many other projects that will im- prove the park experience for visitors. In 2013, more than 1.2 mil- lion park visitors contributed more than $56 million to the local economy and supported 716 jobs related to tourism, ac- cording to the release. Comments can also be sub- mitted through the parks' web- pages at nps.gov/lavo or nps. gov/whis beginning Thursday. Following the public meet- ing and outreach efforts through social media and com- munity events, feedback will determine how, or whether, the proposed fee increases would be implemented.
