The network hadn't announced exactly when it will be back at the time this was written, but it's pretty definite that it won't be returning to Sundays; "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation," which took over that time slot, will yield it to the new spinoff "CSI: Cyber" in the spring. Q : Which was the first network to broadcast the information that President John F. Kennedy had died? — Art Raines, Buffalo, N.Y. A : By most accounts, it was NBC, once the White House officially confirmed it ... though it bears men- tion that CBS preceded that by sev- eral minutes, and Dan Rather has recounted on many occasions how he sweated out that time gap. He had spoken by telephone with one of the two priests who had performed the last rites, and who told Rather that the president was dead. The reporter then phoned CBS News in New York and said, "I think he's dead," which was relayed by CBS Radio as the official word al- most immediately. Walter Cronkite then reported it on CBS Television several minutes later, though he pointed out the information was ac- cording to Rather. ABC also went early — twice — before the official confirmation was given. In the end, ABC and CBS gave the final word almost simultaneously, approximately three minutes after NBC had. Bear in mind, being 1963, this was well before television was equipped to receive and present information with today's brand of im- mediacy. Cronkite's initial reports on the situation famously were like radio broadcasts, with only his voice ac- companied by a "Bulletin" slide, since the cameras needed several minutes to warm up before they actually could show his image on the air. Q : Is there any chance of Kelsey Grammer or David Hyde Pierce making an appear- ance on "Hot in Cleveland"? — Linda Chappelear, Heath, Ohio A : Sure ... in the same way there's a chance of inclement weather next week. Moreover, Tony Award winner Pierce (also a multiple Emmy winner, as is Grammer) is readying to make his Broadway directing debut with next spring's musical "It Shoulda Been You."
