Asacollegestu- dent in my pre- Christian days I was mega moved by the film, The Lone- liness of the Long Distance Runner. A breakout role for British actor Tom Courtenay, the story depicts young ju- venile delinquent Colin Smith sentenced to a re- form school run by a ty- rannical thug of a gov- ernor whose passion is marathon running. After several attempts to break Smith the governor dis- covers his talent for dis- tance running and of- fers enticements if Smith will run for the school. It is all about the gover- nor's vanity and nothing to do with the welfare of any of his charges. When Smith realizes how thor- oughly he has sold out for a few privileges he stops in the grand race just be- fore crossing the finish line. In this climactic mo- ment he refuses victory to assert his independence and to spite the authority figure who has used him. His gesture is all about the power to say NO when all other options are cut off. He considers his NO a vic- tory though he returns to the bottom in the reforma- tory culture with an ex- tended sentence. When The Game Stands Tall is currently in the- atres with a similar cli- mactic moment whose meaning is — and makes — all the difference in the world. A primary subplot involves a fictional run- ning back — Chris Ryan — whose father is abu- sively obsessive about the son breaking the all time scoring record for Califor- nia high school athletes. Ryan ties the record in the last game and is poised to carry the ball into the en- dzone in a walk near the end of the game. He too stops — and runs out the clock — after mak- ing sure his team wins the game. But his act is not defiance; it is sub- mission. He says in the huddle — be- fore taking a knee on the next two plays — that he is a member of a team and not interested in it being all about him. He has all the glory he needs already; he gives his trib- ute to the team and the coach who brought him all the way to where he is. Chris Ryan is the only fictional character in the film. His story is truer than the facts — because fiction at its best tells the truth more clearly and more fully than mere facts. Every other char- acter and incident is true and correct. The Ryan subplot sim- ply draws the whole truth from the history in more living color. This is no one-dimen- sional march to athletic glory as a reward for clean living and dedication. The story actually begins af- ter the one hundred fifty- one game winning streak ends and a new team must discover how to live post- streak. Meanwhile, ev- ery character is flawed or struggling or both — like real life. TK spends his young life trying to climb out of the ghetto and wins a scholarship to the Uni- versity of Oregon together with his lifelong friend, Tayshon. The latter contin- ues to party with gangster wannabes in the ghetto and goes into a tailspin when TK — the innocent and responsible one — is randomly gunned down by a gang member while picking Tayshon up from a place where he should not be. Their coach delivers the eulogy and confesses that — while he will con- tinue to love and serve his Lord Jesus he has no an- swers and nothing but de- spair over the senseless killing. The coach him- self has hidden flaws that bite him, his family, and his team. He secretly smokes. Hardly a ticket to hell, but Coach is so image con- scious he is living a lie — and that is a character is- sue. His smoking leads to a near fatal heart at- tack, being unavailable to his team for several criti- cal months, and the expo- sure of his hypocrisy. He is already less than available to his family, and the con- fluence of consequences leads him to authentic re- pentance across the board. He will become a bet- ter husband and father, a better coach, and a bet- ter man. He does this not because he is so good but because he chooses — re- peatedly — to live a life re- ferred to God and to the ones he is called to serve. His choice is all the more important when it is clear and consequential that some past choices have been poor ones. This movie is well writ- ten, directed with vision, and tightly edited. The performances are crisp and natural. That makes it an excellent piece of work and one all of us can en- joy. But it also presents a powerful depiction of a prophetic community, a 1 Corinthians 12 culture, in which every one has a piv- otal role and no one is ex- pendable. See it. GODTALK When the game stands tall — faith with excellence Jim Wilson Join us at the Presbyte- rian Church of Red Bluff at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 6 for a performance by Brent Ver- non and Sam. After nearly two decades on the road as a full time musician and ventriloquist, Brent Vernon still loves his job. With a schedule of 130- 140 appearances each year, Brent has developed a re- markable ability to con- nect with all age groups in a variety of settings. He is a singer and accomplished pianist. One unique facet of a Brent Vernon concert is his sidekick Sam, a hilariously expressive ventriloquist figure. In every presenta- tion, kids of all ages are de- lighted by this quirky little man. Sam the Dummy as he is known to his Facebook fol- lowers, has his own CD of fun and character-building songs. Not to be outdone by a dummy, Brent has recorded three CDs of his own, most recently working with pro- ducer Don Koch on "Take to the Sky," a collection of 12 original songs. "I still cringe sometimes when people ask what I do," Vernon says. "Some folks probably think that I'm all over the map. But when you hear the songs, read the sto- ries and listen to Sam do his thing, there is a com- mon thread of humor and sincerity that runs through it all. What are my core messages? They're simple, I can tell you that. Love God, trust Him, be who He wants you to be, prac- tice kindness, obey God's Word and use your talents for good. That pretty much sums it up." PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH Musician and ventriloquist to perform CONTRIBUTED Brent Vernon and Sam. The Associated Press AURORA, COLO. The strange journey of three suburban Denver girls who authorities say tried to join Islamic State mil- itants in Syria has many in their close-knit east Af- rican community worried about whether their own children will be the next to be lured to terror. The girls' voyage has mystified many in the U.S., and has been even more troubling among Aurora's Somali and Sudanese im- migrants, thousands of whom fled civil war and forged new lives in the Den- ver suburbs, where refugees easily find jobs driving cabs or working in the meat in- dustry. But while the girls' par- ents were working to give them a better life, being a Muslim teenager isn't easy in an American high school, said Ahmed Odowaay, a community advocate who works with youth. It's easy to feel like an outsider, even as a U.S. cit- izen. Even his 10-year-old daughter gets taunts of "terrorist" when she wears her hijab in school, he said. "This community is out- cast. They feel like they don't belong here. They're frustrated," Odowaay said from his seat at Barwaaqo, a restaurant hidden in one of Aurora's low-slung strip malls, where other men dined on goat and spa- ghetti, a favorite east Afri- can dish.
