T T 2 The Golden Crescent T There was an error in a caption featured in the spring 2014 newsletter. In a photo for the "Stepping Back in Time" article, Nell Valore Quinlan, Colorado '20 (fourth from the left), was misidentified as Ivy Fuller Olds '15. Next to Nell are Kathleen Lyons Haines '15 and Marya Roberts Ferguson '52. Thanks to Mary Quinlan Wingate '52 and Pat Patton Smith '53 for the corrections! The late 1960s and 1970s brought the same now- familiar changes to Kansas State as to the rest of the country. Many social mores were being challenged, and yet Greek life in Manhattan survived relatively unscathed. Theta Iota was thriving and enjoying the new addition to the house. Campus activities began to take on more community-minded and social causes and our chapter was well represented. The chapter celebrated its 65th anniversary with a large banquet and dance. In 1990, Theta Iota lost one of its last surviving charter members, Ivy Fuller Olds '15. A dear sister, Ivy was known and loved by every Theta Iota member up to that time, as she frequently visited the house. A generous gift from her estate enabled the chapter to pay off its mortgage at the time. In turn, that enabled the House Corporation to procure a loan allowing the enclosure of the west portico. This breakfast nook has been an invaluable addition and true asset to our house, and it also serves as the buffet area for all meals except those served family-style in the dining room. By 2000, record numbers of young women were entering rush, now called recruitment, and the local Panhellenic board was requiring larger pledge classes, now called new member classes. A new trend in campus housing was suite living. Theta Iota began to feel significant competition with other leading sororities on campus regarding this latest development, and began a study regarding the potential of a campaign to once again update our home. By 2005, plans were underway for the significant remodeling of bedrooms in the original part of our house, all of the bathrooms, and the basement area. Work proceeded that transformed the sleeping dorm into a five-person sleep/study suite and the pledge lounge into an eight-person sleep/study suite. Most other bedrooms were also reconfigured, including the president's room. In the basement, the chapter room and several storage rooms were converted to two suites and a new bathroom. The chapter now holds all-house meetings in the rec room. The laundry room was moved closer to the bedrooms. Further updates included remodeling of the "new" rec room, the conversion of the "old" rec room into a 24-hour quiet study room, painting throughout the house, and new carpet and flooring. Details such as lighting and trim work were designed to remain true to the character of the Italian-style villa house, and decorating remained in shades of silver, gold, and blue at the request of the collegians. The results combined to offer a house for Greek living that any campus would be proud to have. Today, it is frequently referred to by many potential new members as one of the loveliest houses at KSU. As we move into the second 100 years of Theta Iota, we can be very proud of our sisters' many accomplishments during the chapter's first century. We are not only a part of a leading national fraternity, but at Kansas State University, our presence also remains strong. Our collegians are frequently recipients of campus awards and are actively involved in fundraising for our national philanthropy, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. While our alumnae live in many corners of the world, we will always be connected by our perpetual bonds of friendship and love. And we welcome our future sisters knowing that Theta Iota will offer them a lifetime of memories, too. Stepping Back in Time: Past and Future Meet Carolyn Abrams H Overland Park, Kan.
