W We're not sure where the time has gone, but this past semester and summer have flown by! It must have to do with how busy we've been in preparation for our 100th anniversary weekend, which is scheduled for April 17-19. We hope you're planning to attend this milestone celebration as it will be a special one indeed! We have been sprucing up the Chapter House in anticipation of your visit and are making final plans with our collegians to welcome you home again. Please note specific details regarding the scheduled events on page 4 so that you won't miss a minute of the celebration. Dining Room Furniture Refinished The House Corporation is quite proud of a major accomplishment in the total refinishing of all of our hardwood dining room furniture, which consists of eight tables and 80 chairs with upholstered seats. Thanks to contributions from many sisters, we were able to have each piece professionally stripped, stained, and finished, and each chair reupholstered. Most of you will recognize this furniture as it has been in place in our dining room since the mid- 1960s. We're grateful that the fine quality of it afforded us the relative luxury of not having to purchase new pieces. We're also happy to note that thanks to the initiation class of '76, the refreshing of the beloved senior chairs was completed. They occupy a place of honor in the foyer. Closet Cleaning One of the main items on the summer task list was closet cleaning. At long last, the ritual closet was reestablished, and now chapter materials are all together in one place. All closets, many of which used to be the phone booths, were cleaned out and organized. All chapter scrapbooks and old Royal Purple yearbooks are safely stored yet accessible to all. Also stored safely are the blueprints of both major house renovations. Much time was spent on reorganizing and refreshing the photo composites that we still have. Although some are missing and some are in storage at the house, we have at least one for every few years since the 1950s, and many are on display. An ongoing conversation is that while we receive a new huge composite every year, our wall space stays the same. As storage is at a premium, suggestions regarding this issue are welcome! Future Projects The House Corporation identified two areas of the house that are in need of some specific attention. First, the only room in the house that has remained relatively untouched, a basement storage room, will become our new arts room. The room still has the original foundation walls, which will remain as they are. New lighting was installed, and a large work table and some shelving are already in place. We would still like to add some high stools for use next to the table, add a screen to protect the air conditioning unit in that room, and seal the concrete floor for easier cleaning. Upon completion, our collegians will have a place to work without fear of spattering paint or messy glue and have storage for their materials and projects. Secondly, the back patio and Delta Beach balconies are in need of some sprucing up. The stairway connecting the three levels needs to be scraped and painted, and the surrounding landscape needs to be refreshed. Additionally, the original built-in barbecue grills need to be removed or replaced. Many of you undoubtedly have fond memories of our back patio areas and they remain a unique area of our house. If you have an inclination to help support the work that needs to be done in either of these areas, your contribution would be greatly appreciated. Final Updates This summer, the Parents' Club purchased a new wall-mounted TV and installation for the lounge adjacent to the rec room. It is very much appreciated by members who are taking a study break or catching up on their latest reality series. Theta Iota has a history of having strong parent involvement through Dads' and Moms' Clubs and most recently the combined Parents' Club, for which we are all thankful. This summer also saw the professional painting of new first-floor bedrooms as part of the rotating plan of areas in the Chapter House to receive fresh paint each year. As usual, flooring was cleaned House Corporation Completes Significant Summer Projects Chapter House Ready for 100th Anniversary Celebration Fall 2014 Marilee Horner Whelan '68 works on the new arts room. Janet Whitehair Cooper '68 cleans the shelves in the new arts room. (Continued on page 4)
